I have a friend (ok, well more acquaintance) who just failed her one hour glucose test during pregnancy.

She posted it on facebook, and said she will retake it on Thursday...

saying "maybe she will fast this time"

I let her have it. I can only tolerate so much. Some of her other friends also suggested fasting before this test.

Here is what went down....

*** FRIEND replied to her own post about failing****
yeah i think i'll go back on Thur and do the 3 hour test after fasting this time.

**** RESPONSE FROM PERSON*****
I also failed the first test but then past the second.

**** RESPONSE FROM ANOTHER*****
Lots of women fail the first one...maybe you should fast before the next one.

**** I POSTED******
Umm, fasting should be a regulated part of the test. You should call your Dr. or Lab first. It is better to fail and get it taken care of properly, than mess with test procedures and have a false negative result. It may make you feel better short term, but that does no good for you or baby long term. If you purposely manipulate the outcome by not following pre-set fasting/non-fasting procedures, then what is the point of even taking it?

I hope I wasn't TOO harsh, but I did want to send a clear message. I am not easily riled up, but this definitely ruffled my feathers.

now, with that being said, I have never been pregnant, so what do you think. Should I stay with my big girl **ahemm** under clothing assets, or do I need to apologize..???

Thanks

the underclothing, Ohana! At least in that lonely wilderness there was one adult voice....of course we all know how well adults are listened to

Really she might not have any idea of the seriousness of taking no notice of a test.
Try to send her this link instead.
ADIPS - Gestational Diabetes (http://adips.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=38)
Gestational diabetes mothers actually have a higher rate of baby malformations than type 1 mothers because the blood sugars aren't controlled early in the babies development.
If she still didn't listen I would then back it up with crankiness. Because her child could actually get really harmed if she tries to cheat on diabetes tests.
Heck no don't apologize. You are the voice of her baby.

Ahhh, social network friendships. Er, acquantanceships. ;)

1. Credit where credit is due. She is retaking the test. Indicates a desire to "Get to the bottom of it" to me.

2. Not sure about the idea of manipulating the test this way. I mean, if you don't fast, your BGs will be elevated, hence you "fail" and are labelled a pre or diabetic. I don't think anyone would want that? (NOTE: I never took this test, so that is my reading of what a fail means, apologies if I am wrong). If she was happy with the fail outcome, she wouldn't be retaking the test, she'd be saying "woe is me, I've got GD". To me, it's somebody not being thorough enough - her, the doc, or both. A shame, but perhaps not on purpose.

3. The other people are just idiots. Ignore them.

4. As said, you are the only voice of useful reason there. Giving her information to take it seriously and truly find out, you are truly helping.

I wouldn't worry about coming across a bit strong if that's how it could be read (you were hardly offensive in my book)... if she cares at all for her baby, she will gladly follow your lead, not take offense.

Just going to chime in here since I know all about this test. :)

The 1 hour *is* a fasting test. She should have been fasting for at least 8 hours before the test.

The 3 hour *is* a fasting test. She will be drinking double the amount of glucola than she did for the 1 hour test. During the test she *should NOT* walk around, exercise, drink water, or eat, since those things will all skew the test results.

There are a faction of people who believe that gestational diabetes is a lie. Something doctors do to keep you under their thumb. In fact there's a famous OB/Gyn who states this as a fact on all of his writings. We here on DF know that it's a real thing, and so does most of the world... I'm just pointing out that there are a lot of people out there who believe that there's no such thing as GD.
