I've been having some weird readings today and i dont know why. Here are my readings so far...
-115 (fasting)
-87 (before lunch)
-95 (at lunch)
-163 (2 hrs. after lunch)
-230 (1 hr after bean dip & chips)

At lunch when i was 95 i randomly had severe shakey hands and felt veryy lightheaded. I used to feel this way when i was under 100 when i was first diagnosed but i havent felt anywhere near like i did then in at least 2 weeks. Now I have had a sore throat today and ive also been extremely tired, much more than usual. Ive been sleeping for the past 2 hours since i got home from school. Ive also had a pretty bad headache. I took advil this afternoon but it didnt help much with the headache. I'm also very hot. Could i be getting sick? Or why else would my readings be this way. I havent had a reading over 140 for the past two weeks so even numbers in the 160's are high for me.

Also, i found out today that i was suppossed to open a new levemir pen last wednesday. They are supposed to be thrown out after 28 days and i forgot to do that so ive been using the same one for 35 days. Could this have any affect on my numbers?

Please help me out. Im really worrried and im afraid to eat anything right now.

Hopefully someone with Type 1 will be along to offer advice soon but meantime just stay cool. BG in the 200s is not great but is not an emergency either.

Sickness/infection can put your BG control off balance for a few days.

It is also possible that your Levemir is out of date so use a new one for your next regular dose.

Do you have any way to test for Ketones..? Some BG meters will do this, more often it is a urine dipstick.

Have you been advised on how/when to give a correction bolus of fast-acting insulin to lower your BG between meals?

A BG higher than you are used to and/or sickness/infection could all lead to the headache and tiredness.

Keep testing :)

Hi Calliegirl. Sorry you're feeling poorly.

First, being ill can cause your BG to rise and can make it a little difficult to bring down. So...you may need to increase your basal a little while you are sick. Go ahead and change your Levemir pen too when you do your next basal injection. I've found that Levemir deteriorates faster than you might think.

You should take a correction bolus now to bring your BG down into the target range that you and your doctor set. Do you know your correction factor?

Do not eat anything until your BG is down in a better range. But make sure you drink LOTS of water. That can help your BG come down and you also need to stay hydrated when you're ill.

Feel better, Callie, and let us know how you're doing.

Jen

Thanks everyone. I've never been sick before since i was just diagnosed last month. I am going to call my doctor in the morning and ask her what she thinks. Im trying to drink alot of water and i'll keep you all updated on what happens. Hopefully it was just the Levemir being out of date or something. I feel really crappy like i could fall asleep any minute and i still have a pretty bad headache. Anyways, thanks again & i'll keep you all posted.

ya, just keep your basal rate a little higher, keep checking you BG, keep the fluids coming. your BG is very strange when you get sick. can fluctuate very easily. Im sorry you dont feel good when it gets to 200.....idk I usually feel more relaxed and better when im 200-300....but I would rather keep my health then feel good lol.
