Hi, I'm new to this forum and I would like opinions about a strange phenomenon that I'm experiencing with my blood sugar readings.
First of all, I'm a 52 year old male, been diagnosed with type II diabetes for 4 years now.
I do Bikram Yoga on a regular basis. This has helped me lose a significant amount of weight, which is good because the Novolog that I take tends to keep the weight on and weight loss has been difficult. I've been using 20IU about twice a day.
I go the entire night without eating and first thing in the morning, usually at the 8a.m. or the 10a.m. class I do Bikram Yoga (Hot Yoga). I do not use Novolog at this time. So, basically I'm going on a empty stomach, just drinking water. I do take 1000 mg of Metformin before leaving for Yoga.
I test my blood sugar prior to leaving and it's usually around the normal range between 100-130.
I do the Yoga, sweat like crazy and come home and test again and my BS has consistently been around 200-260. This seems crazy because whenever I do aerobic exercises, I'm able to drop my BS down to a normal range.
I'm thinking that the positions are stimulating my liver, causing the blood sugar to rise.
Any opinons?

I too have experienced something of the sort although nor with Yoga. When I work on my boat which requires me to crouch on all four and contort myself into awkward positions all the time, my BG always seems to be higher afterward, even though the work can be quite strenuous and I can do this for a couple to three hours solid.

I've never done hot yoga but I do all other kinds of yoga. I find if I do any kind of exercise in the morning my bg goes up. If I do it later on in the day it usually goes down. Many diabetics suffer from something called dawn phenomenom. This is when the liver shoots out glucose in the middle of the night and raises our bg's early in the a.m. If you don't eat right away when you wake up the effect will continue and bg will rise. This morning I was 125 when I woke at 6:30 ate 1/4 c greek yogurt with almond butter and 2 hrs later was 115. Another thing that may be causing the spike is cortisol. One yoga teacher told us to be very careful with our breathing. She said if you hold a pose for too long without deep breathing, your body thinks you are stressed and produces cortisol and adreniline ( fight or flight response) and this will spike your glucose. I find sometime if I do power yoga this will happen because of all the ups and downs. I try to do a very long meditation or shavasana at the end to relax and bring bg down. My dr told me not to worry about the spikes as long as they come back down because the effect of the exercise is good. But I still worry.

Yes. Bikram unbalances Pitta (fire), which governs your metabolic axis, including sugar and fat metabolism. Pitta imbalance caused by Bikram begins with extreme energy fluctations, progresses to hypoglycemia, and eventually diabetes. And I'm not even getting into the mental health issues...
Bikram is NOT Yoga and is Un-Balancing for 90% of the population, healthy or not. You need to stop it immediately, as Diabetes is the result of aggravated Pitta imbalance. An Ayurvedic consultation would help you to rid yourself of the imbalances you've accumulated, including your type II diabetes. I do one of the best consultations on the continent, in person or online.

That's a strong opinion about an activity which you allege leads to Diabetes. I am not saying you are wrong but are there any independent studies out there to confirm your hypothesis?
