I bolused 24 rapids instead of 24 units of my basal.
I was half asleep...
I realized around 3 mins later. Both pens are the same, cept one has marker on it.
Immediately I ate some chocolate, soem cashews, and some juice, even had a bite of my emergency choclate.
I am okay now, just a bit shaky.
There wasn't anything I could do cept throw carbs at the fire.

This seems to be going around lately! I know just what you mean about not being fully awake and doing something like that. We really need some UN-Insulin . . . there was a recent thread about that!

Tested...
I thought my panick carbfest woould have me alot higher.
I am currently at 6.2mmol/l after around 5.5 hours.
I hope I don't end up chasing this. But I think it's been long enough to know if I will or not.
I think I have stabilized.

That's funny Jason, you got me to laughing!
I think next time I see my doctor, I'll ask for some un-insulin with a straight face.

There was quite a bit of fat with those carbs, to slow your absorption of them, no? Cashews, while not super-carby, do have a fair amount ... but also fat. I was told not to eat chocolate for lows because I could "die waiting for the carbs."

Well, I wasn't thinking too well, and I didn't remember that.
The oj was probably what brought me around.
Chocolate cashews perhaps next time, dipped in oj. :D

LOL -- that sounds good ... OF COURSE you were not thinking well.. Glad you are okay, that's the main thing.
I still like the raisins, and we always have them handy at my house, b/c of having KIDS. But ... if you do NOT have kids, probably important to keep measured emergency carb stashes of some sort ...

Quit That!
I'm going high just thinking about chocolate covered cashews with a little orange zest!
Mmmmm!
Seriously, Glad you got by the mistake OK.
I managed to shoot a couple of units of Lantus when I meant to do Novalog the other day and those pens are completely different looking.

I am so glad that I am on the pump now and I just take one kind of insulin. (humolog)
I used to take humolog and lantus. But reading stories like this always kept me clear minded when injection time rolled around. :)
Glad your ok.

I am going to pre-load syringes for a week or two with my basal insulin just to see how that is.
I am normally at work when I do my first basal injection.
Today I just grabbed my gear and injected in bed.
I wasn't THAT sleepy either, just not paying attention to which pen I was grabbing.
Lesson learned.
Maybe. :D

Stuff like that is exactly why I get Lantus in a vial and Novlog in the pens. I won't ever mix up the markedly tangible difference between the items.

D'oh! Have done something similar myself - don't you just hate the feeling of dread when you realise your error!
I made sure my pens were different colours from then on.
And the combination of food that you ate was pretty spot on for treating it as well - juice for immediate effect and nuts and chocolate to cover as your longer acting carbs.
Glad you got through it ok and are feeling better :)
Hey Jason - sorry for your morning of woe. I thought I'd done a similar thing the other night: Dinner out with friends..went to do my 10:15 8 units of Levemir, came back to the table and had my Novolog pen in my pocket instead of the Levemir. I spent the next couple of hours testing and testing, then remembered that I'd pulled out both pens, put the Novolog in the pocket, drawn the Levemir and put it back in my purse. I don't need "Uninsulin"....I need New Brain!

Better write with a marker pen "3" on the bolus pen and "1" on the basal pen, this will save you from such mistakes in future.

I have been having the fear of doing that same thing. I am glad your alright. I have purchased two carring cases for my insulins. The cases the same but different colors. I hope this method prevents me from making the unfortunate mistake that you did. Stay safe!
