Hello, everyone! Thank you, for looking at my post. Maybe someone can shed some light on an insulin situation I just had? I'm currently using the Humalog Pen, for my insulin before meals. I gave my morning shot a little while ago, which is 81 units. Being so much & the pen only dials up to 60, I have to give two shots. But to get to the point... This morning, when giving part 2 of my shot I guess I hit the corner of a bug bite. Didn't even realize it, cause it's almost gone. But I noticed some blood seeped into my pen. The shot when in well enough, & of course a little blood dribbled out... Which we all know, happens... But it's weird how a little blood, right before I pushed in the plunger seeped into the pen. Now I'm surmizing the shot I just gave is okay, but I guess my worry is about future shots using this pen. Because with the blood in the pen now, instead of being clear it's a very faint pink color. Does anyone know, if this will dilute the insulin making it less strong? Or make it not work at all?

call the manufacter, i bet they will replace the pen for free and u could pick up a new one this afternoon at a pharmacy at no charge.

i wouldnt advise using the pen with blood in it. it is ur own blood yes, but it cant be good sitting there in that insulin until u finish up the pen.

I was told my all my D educators that if I get any blood into the pen or the cartridge that I am to discard it and not continue use...not sure the whole reason why...but maybe this helps a little.

Contamination maybe? I would bin the cartridge as the blood from/near the insect bite may well be infected. You are also effecting the potency of the insulin by mixing it with another liquid even if it's only small.

My advice would also recommend discarding the pen. I've not had that happen to me, but if it did, I would throw the pen away.

yeah I would probably start using another pen. I know they sometimes suck up a little bit of insulin back up when you stop pushing on it. I have never had it suck up blood though.

the most humalog I have ever taken was 30u and it made my bloodsugar drop to 25 for about an hour. I think 81u would kill me X_X

*has chills thinking about eating 1000 carbs in 1 meal*
