I read here on DF that it does happen. One of my kids - age 21 has been hypo off and on for a few years and just got a fasting test result yesterday in the pre-diabetes range.

I was hypogylcemic, and am nor pre-d, and could possibly be borderline type 2. My cousin also went from Hypogylcemia to type 2. I do think though if you practice good health, with diet and exercise you could possibly stop any progression that could be made.

It's actually a very common symptom of prediabetes or the early stages of type 2. I had episodes of hypoglycemia for several years. Last year, when I was 23, I finally found a doctor who would listen to me and found out that I had prediates.
Have you actually had any bloodwork done? A two hour glucose tolerance test in particular is a necessity, IMO. There is a good chance that you are having what is known as reactive hypoglycemia. This means that yoiu eat a meal that is high in carbs, your blood sugar spikes, and the your pancreas produces too much insulin whic sends you low. If you're not testing your blood sugar on a regular basis, there is a very good chance you are going high and do not even realize it. One hour is the typical peak after a meal.

I completely agree with Jessi. Hypoglycemia is definitely a possible precursor for diabetes. I've known a lot of people that suffered from hypoglycemia to go on to develop Type 2 diabetes. I'd say the hypo probably resulted from an overproduction or over-release of insulin because of the first stages of insulin resistance. As time goes on, and the resistance grows, the occurances of hypos lessions.
One easy way to know is to get a C-peptide test done to see how much insulin is being released by the body.
