I'm new here and searching for answers. Has anyone had any experience with their down syndrome screenings coming back positive. I have been told that having type 1 medications/insulins can effect the out come of these tests, is that true? Also can just being Type 1 increase the odds?

Please let me know any experiences you have had...THANK YOU!

Hi Jenny,

I am currently 17w5d. Had my NT screening test done for DS and it came back positive (1 out of 156 which is higher than the cutoff 1 out of 300). I went ahead to have my amnio done and it came back normal. The NT thickness came back at 0.27cm, which is at the high side of normal range (normal range being anything below 0.3cm). They also consider your age at delivery and 2 other blood markers (PAPP-A and Free B-Hcg). What I heard is that type I diabetes often give false reading of the blood markers.

How far along are you in the pregnancy? What indications have you that got your OB to send you for DS screenings? I am of advanced maternal age by the way...

Good luck!

My perinatologist will not do the routine quad-screen at 11-13 weeks, on a T1 mom, due to the fact that a T1s blood will show positive markers for all Trisomy's. We did the NT scan and it came back at 1.3mm, which is perfect, and I'm over 35. I refused the amnio, since I have a high risk of miscarriage due to another blood issue.

I had an NT test done three weeks ago. The risk from the test was about 1 in 13000 or something like that which indicates not much risk. My obstetrician told me things like IVF and diabetes increase hormone indicators and the nuchal fold measurement are larger in diabetic than non diabetic patients. She said the risk might look more inflated than because NT tests may not be accurate for diabetics and not to do the test as it may worry me unnecessarily. I still did it though : ).
