My husband had a vitrectomy done on his left eye on Tues, since then he has not been able to see out of the eye. He describe it as if you close your eye and cover it loosely with your hand then turn towards light you see how the light dims or becomes brighter.

We went back to the surgeon yesterday (Wed) who told us this is normal because he has a small pool of blood which is blocking his sight. (not sure if we believe this), and he would also like us to come in on Friday to be seen again (we were told originally we would be seen a week later). so he could check him before the weekend.

Our concern is the amount of pain he is in, and the fact that he can not see anything.

Has anyone else exprienced this same situation? or have any advise.

I'm trying to be optimistic but my husband is having a very hard time believing his sight will come back in that eye, since everything he has read says he should be able to see even a little bit out of that eye.

Thanks for your help.

I would be concerned but not overly so.

It is a major surgery, so having blood in the eye afterwards is not unexpected; though I haven't seen this in the half dozen cases I'm familiar with, including my own.

I will say that blood in the eye in itself is not much of a concern. It will clear up over the next 2-3 months, maybe sooner. As long as the gunk was cleared out successfully, there should be no issues.

It took a couple of weeks for my useful vision to return and about 6 months for what I now consider full vision to come back. Have patience.
