hello everyone.. I am type 1 and want to know if anyone is taking Novolog mix 70/30 with lantus. Recently I changed my doctor and he recommended me using Humalog instead of Novolog mix 70/30. I noticed that humalog is not as strong as Novolog mix 70/30. I need some input on this

I've never used any mixed insulins but they generally contain fast acting and intermediate acting insulins. Lantus is a long acting insulin so if you add that to the mix you've got three types going on, which can lead to unpredictable results. How often are you taking the Movolog 70/30 and Lantus? It sounds like your doctor would prefer you to take Lantus for your long acting insulin (some people can get away with one injection a day and others find it works best to split it in two) and cover your meals and corrections for high BGs with Humalog. This is standard and what many people do. Both of these insulins are more predictable than the mixed insulin. You may think Humalog isn't as "strong" because you're used to the lingering effects of the "70" part of the mixed insulin, which lasts much longer in your system than Humalog and the "30" part of the mix!

Oh man. I've never heard of using mix and lantus together. I'll have to ponder that one, but I think it's asking for trouble.
Using a fast acting like Novolog or Humalog with a long acting like Lantus is by far the most popular program.

I noticed that humalog is not as strong as Novolog mix 70/30.
I agree with all the above, and I'd ask... what underlies this statement? Strong in what sense?

I used to use Novolog 70/30 but not with Lantus. It was a good "first insulin" for me I think since I didn't have to figure two things. Now, though, I use Humalog before meals and Lantus at night and I can't even say how much better I like it. Even if you find you're needing more Humalog, I'd encourage you to switch off the mix which is not nearly as flexible as the two separate insulins.
Good luck!

The thing about using a rapid insulin like Humulog is that you can tailor your dose to what you eat plus or minus any correction needed.
The Lantus should cover your basal needs so the rapid can be very flexible.
With the 70/30 you are really limited as to how much you can change and will often need to eat to avoid lows. I would expect the NPH in the 70/30 to be difficult to manage on top of a dose of Lantus.
My old endo tried switching me between NPH and 70/30 with disasterous results. Hypo city!

Humalog doesn't work as quickly or as effectively for me... which is part of why I prefer to use Novolog.
Maybe you could try Novolog instead of the Humalog? I agree with others though that it's odd you were put on a mix while taking lantus.. you shouldn't need a mixed insulin on a basal/bolus regimine.

It's very odd to be on a mix with Lantus (or Levemir). Poodlebone and TommyC1 pretty much covered the explanation. The other problem with the NPH-type mixes is that NPH has a really nasty spike in its curve. The spike can be used as a benefit for certain kinds of problems, but most of the time, it just causes unneccssary lows. You will almost certainly need to play around with your dosages for a little while until you get the feel for how the new regimen works. Don't be discouraged during this process.
And, Novolog does not work as well for me as Humalog, to counter Sarahspins' experience. Everyone is different.
