I've only been over 200 while pregnant (my normal weight is around 155), but it should be pretty easy for them to figure out if you're T1 or T2. Ask for antibody (ICA and GAGDA) and a c-peptide test if those haven't already been done.

I was originally assumed to be a T2 when I was diagnosed because I had an idiot doctor. It took finding a new one and getting those done to determine I was a T1.

I was overweight when I was diagnosed Type 1 at age 19. I did lose some weight right before diagnosis. I got very sick very fast and was hospitalized in DKA upon diagnosis.

I remember the endo in the hospital telling me that I would need to take two injections every day for the rest of my life (the normal treatment at the time!) and that nothing I did or ate caused my diabetes.

I peaked at 280-295lbs (I'm 6'3), circa senior year of high school- been fat since I was 10 or so, 'clinically obese' according to BMI charts. I started shrinking a year and a half ago and ended up in the ICU in Feb. weighing 175lbs on the bed- they diagnosed me a type 1 after the C-Peptide count came back a big fat zero. My stomach looked like a pregnant woman's.

I chalk it up to being in DKA for a very extended period of time.

I peaked at 189 then I started all the dying of thirst and frequent restroom trips. Had a urinary tract infection that wouldnt go away. I was obese according to the BMI chart. I am 5'7"

I lost about 29 pounds a little before being diagnosed and gained 10 of it back.

And I am 29 so type 1 was out the door for me. Was originally diagnosed a type 2. Ended up having a c peptide and GAD determining type 1.5 :D

ah the sweet memories....

I have no weight issues, nor have I ever.

I weigh around 175lbs and am around 5'8". Not tall at all.

And I am in good shape...

Cept for this diabetes thingy that has decided to hitch a ride with me for the rest of my life. :T

I had weight problems all my life and yoyoed for decades. Finally got to over 182 in 2005. I am 5' tall, so that may as well be a ton! No diabetes at the time. I took a hold of myself, started a reduced carb Zone diet and lost 50 pounds by September of 2007. Was diagnosed T1 in December 2007. Weight has stayed steady in the 130 - 135 range (despite my endo's certainty that I'd gain 20 pounds back!) since 2007. I'm currently working off the last 10 pounds just because I know I can with low carbing ;)

That sounds like me to a T. I was 240 pounds in April of 2007. By the time of my diagnosis in December of 2007, I was down to around 180 pounds. I was still a bit chubby, but I felt I looked better than I had in years. Then the sugar result came back during a blood draw to check my testosterone levels.

I now weigh 255 pounds. My activity level has increased tremendously, but I am still gaining weight. I have an appointment with my Endo for my regular visit a week from today. We'll see how my thyroid is doing.

Regards,

D

I peaked at 206 (5'6") when I was diagnosed as a type 2. A year (and 40 pounds later) I was correctly diagnosed as a type 1. I've since gained back the 40 pounds :(

Some time after I was diagnosed, I lost weight and kept it off. I started gaining weight again about 10-11 years ago when other health issues started. Also, trying to keep tighter control led to weight gain because I was having too many lows that I was feeding.

4 years ago when I was at my absolute highest weight and had no control (hypo unaware, constant lows followed by highs) I finally went to an endo for the first time since diagnosis. She made a bunch of changes to my treatment and told me to return in a month. When I went back she sent me to see the CDE/nurse. I'm 5'8" and at the time I think I weighed in on their scale at 268 pounds, which horrified me. The CDE kept asking me stuff like, 'Who told you that you have Type 1" and asking about my diagnosis. Due to my weight she clearly thought I was Type 2. She ordered c-peptide and antibody tests and at my following appointment she seemed almost disappointed that they showed zero c-peptide and what she called "tons" of antibodies. She recommended a pump and once I started pumping I was able to finally lose weight.

It sucks that they automatically assume all Type 2 if you're overweight or are older. I was lucky that the hospital and endo immediately diagnosed me correctly. I was in extremely bad shape but I bet that even today some doctors would have prescribed a pill and sent me on my way. I wouldn't have gotten far since I could barely move by the time I got to the hospital!

Before Dx I was up to almost 200 lbs which is a little bit chubby for a 5' 8" guy. I went to the Doc after losing more than 60 lbs over 4 months for no apparent reason ( well except for the constant peeing hunger and thirst! ). No sign of DKA then or since.
Since that was before T1.5, LADA or MODY were commonly known and I did not respond to pills the Doc decided I was type 1 and put me on insulin.

In 2006 I was 285 lbs (I'm 6'-5") which is less than my high of 308, but still enough to be pre-D. I was put on meds and told to lose weight. I started running, got down to 220-230, got off meds, was doing well for a year or so.

Then November of 2008 I started losing weight again. Awesome! Got down to 190 before I made it to the doctor and found out I was now a Type 1. So far, 4 weeks of insulin, gained 18 pounds.

In the mid 1990's I started using Humalog. I gained 57 pounds in just a few years time. My ideal weight is 185 and I was 242 with all that gain. I did not know it was the insulin that resilted in my gain. I had never been more than 5 pounds overweight during my first 45 years of Thpe 1. I was then diagnosed with insulin resistance, a Type 2 characteristic. I am and will always be a double diabetic. I reduced my carbs to 1506 per day, bought a treadmill and exercised more than usual. I lost 26 pounds. I leveled out and have not lost more fo several years. I recently gained 5 pounds. I still need to lose 36 pounds. I am now averaging only 110g of carbs per day and exercising 2 hours per day. I cannot do streneous exercising, I am 69, so I walk an hour and later in the day I do carpentry work on my house for 1-2 hours.

A Type 1 has to be careful with weight gain since insulin resistance is a possible outcome. Double diabetes is not uncommon. A Type 2 sometimes stops producing insulin and that is a characteristic of Type 1. That is double diabetes too.

Hey Jason. I find it it interesting that there are three generations of type 1 in your family. I can somewhat relate. My mom was diagnosed at 6 and myself at 16. I dont have any children yet and even though I have read about the odds and I know they say its NOT a guarantee I am convinced my child would also wind up with this. How old were you all at diganosis?
