View Full Version : Hole in Macula?

Well, here I go again. Now my good eye has a problem.

When my vitreous sack pulled away from my retina (normal as we age and it dries and shrinks) it held on in one little place. Unfortunately the place was in the middle of my macula and the attachment "yanked" a little hole in it.

My optho, a retinologist will fix it (vitrectomy & repair) because if we leave it, it will deteriorate. I see a tiny grayish area in the middle of my fine vision in that eye. I looked at the Retinal Tomograhy scan, and there it was! A hole! Evidently this happens in mostly women over 50 (even non-diabetic.) This eye is in good shape and chances of complications are supposedly very small.

Has anyone else had experience with this surgery?

Vitrectomy part yes, retinal stitching, no.

The vitrectomy is fairly easy.

I assume they laser it back on. They may also give you a gas bubble. You may have to learn to sleep face down.

Yes. Phooey, gas bubble is a given. Watching TV in a mirror on the floor. Sleeping with face on pillows on bed and nightstand, nose and eye in the middle. Five to seven days. Rats.

No fun, but what are ya gonna do?

I just wondered if anyone knows anyone who's had a macular hole repaired.

I have a friend who had one repaired at the optho's with laser. No vitrectomy. Dunno the circumstances though.

Hi Mich:

While waiting at my opthomologist's office, I did chat one day with two women approximately in their fifties who were both in for checks after having macular holes repaired. I did not ask what the treatment involved but they were both pleased with the results and expected positive checkups. One did mention how difficult sleeping face down was but also laughed and said that with her good results it was well worth it.

Before that, I had never heard of macular holes. I wish I had more details to offer you. I wish you all the best results which I am sure you will get just like the patients I met.

Sorry I don't know more. Perhaps I should be more nosy with people I meet in the waiting room.
