Last night I took my Lantus at 10 and had my last meal around midnight so the Humalog should have been out of my system around 3. This morning at 6:30, I was dreaming that I was having a hypo and treating it. I woke up so low that I had to pop 2 glucose tabs just to have enough energy to get up and grab some crackers. 1 glucose tab usually shoots me up 50mg/dl. I ate probably 25g of crackers and 4 hours later I was back down to 90. Has this ever happened to anybody else?? Any clue what it might have been? I had a couple drinks last night but not enough to give me a buzz and I've had a lot more than that with the same amount of lantus and haven't gone low like that. Thanks

Ive had similar issues as you. 3 or 4 mornings/week I wake up low. So I ended up splitting my Lantus...once at bedtime once at about 10am. Solved my morning lows :)

I'm going to try it tonight. Do you think I could have been having these lows all along and just slept through them? I should let you know that 6am is not early morning for me. I work the afternoon shift so I usually sleep from 4am-noon

With your sleep times, 6 am is equivalent to about 2 am for the rest of us - that's prime time for an overnight hypo! I used to sleep through most of mine - it was only when I started pumping that I realized that I was probably going hypo most nights.

I would cut down slightly on my basal dose first.

My experience thus far with humalog is that even though the four hour duration time has expired the type of food you ate may have broken down within two to three hours leaving a remainder of 1 hour of humalog left with no carbs to consume. The gylcemic index can help you determine what foods break down faster or slower than others. I usually eat a piece of fruit or nuts or yoguart or even a piece of meat with cheese or anything that is at least 15 grams 2 1/2 to 3 hours after taking humalog with my meals to cover any remaining humalog. It"s true when they say diabetics have to eat small meals or snacks often. Since doing this I have not experience hypoglycemia. You shouldn't worry about weight gain if you stick to no or low fat items.
What did you eat at midnight? How much humalog did you take?

According to the CC statement it looks like I had taco bell that night so I'm guessing I had a few chalupas and a taco and a diet coke. Probably around 130g of carb and 8-10u of humalog. I do remember that I didn't have to correct at all that night. I tested at 1:50am and I was at 115mg/dl, next test was 6:26am @ 61mg/dl but it felt more like I was in the 40s, probably because I was sleeping. I split up my lantus last night, I think I might have went low last night too so I'm doing even less lantus tonight. We'll see how that goes. The part that really freaked me out was the huge amount of carbs I ate and still ended up being lower after 4 hours than after I ate the 2 glucose tabs. Here, this might make it easier to visualize
6:26am -- 61mg/dl -- 2 glucose tabs, a couple handfuls of crackers
6:42am -- 92mg/dl -- went back to bed
10:39a -- 89mg/dl
Drinking always lowers my sugar in the morning after my shot more than if not. Never figured it out.
I too have dreams like that and what usually goes thru my mind is I do not want to wake up just to eat. But I do anyway.
