Hi Everyone,
I’m glad to see that there is lots of help and support on this site.

About 3 years ago I started getting hypos once in a while. My symptoms would be sweating, shaking, grumpy. It usually only happened on weekends about 2 hours after breakfast. At the time I didn’t know what was going on and my doctor told me to just eat something when that happens. That did the trick.

About 3 months ago my hypos started getting more severe and more frequent so the point that I never left home without a granola bar. I went in for the FGT three months ago and the results were fine. I explained to my doctor that my father has type 2 diabetes and I was worried. She said that I have reactive hypoglycemia. She told me to eat smaller and more frequent meals.

But about 2 month ago my hypos started getting much worse. Two hours after having raison bran for breakfast I would get hypos. Of course as instructed I would just have a snack which was usually a carb snack.

About 1 month ago I also started getting symptoms of high blood sugar. Blurred vision, fogginess, lack of concentration, and strain on eyes. I changed my diet to low carb but the symptoms continued. I went to a different doctor ask asked for a OGTT. During the test I was again getting hypo symptoms.

Well the result came in at 11 mmol/L or 198 mg/dl. I was in shock. The doctor told me to stick with a diabetic diet (I started seeing a clinical dietitian). He also ordered a cholesterol and A1C test. He asked if I wanted to give my diet 3 months or go on the meds. I said meds so he put me on Metformin 500mg x 2.

I am worried that given I am borderline diabetic and that it might be too late to reverse things. I am only 31 & 155 pounds. My diet is not that bad and I go to the gym on a regular basis. I’m worried because I don’t have the typical profile for diabetes. Does this mean that there is not much I can do to improve my results? How much more can I change my exercise and diet? I think my pancreas was compensating up to this point but it can no longer keep up. I am going to ask for a referral to and endo. I will also get a meter and start monitoring.

Any thoughts or advice? Anyone else who is or was on the borderline on the OGTT? Thanks in advance.

Ask for a C-peptide test. This will show how much insulin you are producing. You may also want to inquire about GAD, ICA, and IA2 tests to see if there are antibodies associated with an auto-immune response. If any are positive, then you need to start insulin.

Love your screen name.

I was not borderline, went from normal fasting to DKA in only 6 mos. And I am still, I think a type 2 (responding to oral meds exercise and low carbing for now, at least).

I think MDs need to more OGTT's.

but yeah at your age and weight, and perhaps at ANY age and weight ... need to rule out Type 1 or 1.5 .... Mortis is right.

Thanks for your reply. I will ask the Endo to test for 1.5 when I get an appointment.

My wife came up with the call sign. She is trying to inject some humour into the situation. She is very supportive.
