Whey protein after anaerobic workouts helps build muscle, whether you have diabetes or not.

I use around half a scoop of whey protein (about 7gs of protein) after my mountain biking sessions. It helps recovery and stabilises my bg, although you have to be careful as taking too much will make you go high hours later. Whey protein can make you fart I was geologising it earlier although someone was suggesting you should be looking for 75%+ of protein per scoop as it reduces the filler manufacturers add. This might reduce the farting effect although it's probably just the digestion of excess protein at least that's my theory. I would be careful not to take too much.

protein % per scoop = (protein per scoop) / (total gram per scoop)

I use Designer Whey on the days I'm lifting. 1 scoop+6 oz of Sugar Free Soy Milk, crushed Ice and Half a Banana. BG does not go up, as a matter of fact it's usually a nice healthy number when I'm done. There are some that have a high Sugar content so like your foods, you need to read the labels and also test before and after to see how it affects you.

I have been using it twice per day -- breakfast, and bedtime (which is post-ex). Maybe that is too much, I may cut back, but I do like it for summer breakfasts!

I've been having protein smoothies about three times per week for lunch. I use the whey protein soy milk and add frozen unsweetened fruit and find it very satisfying.

I eat it as Carbmaster (or Kroeger) vanilla low-carb yogurt about once a day. Sometimew with a sliced fresh strawberry or a spoonful of no-sugar-added pie cherries.

Hi!

First post of mine... I'm a T1 for 1 year now and have been under good control. I've always had problem gaining weight (even before diabetes), I work out 3x a week for 8 months now and only got like 3kg, which makes me still below the "ideal" range of weight (I'm 1,80m and weight only 60kg..).

I wish my nutritionist would let me have some Whey protein after my workouts but she prefers me eating instead some Glucerna or stuff like that.... which obviously don't have enough protein and I believe it's just a waste of cash.

Anyway, I think she's afraid the protein will interfere with my kidneys or something (all my exams including creatinine have always been ok tho). I've searched for some papers regarding whey protein and diabetes but have found none so far.

It was cool hearing you guys take it and have no problems, I think I'll insist some more.

Hi there,
I looked and looked for the best protein mix, particularly because of the time of day I work out (late at night). I wanted a good amount of protein, low carbs, and good balance of fat, cholesterol and sodium contents.
I searched in forums for bodybuilders, at the local stores and even thru low carb forums.
I also tried several different kinds that friends/family were taking.

I couldn't find a good balance of contents, plus the taste was AWFUL if mixed with water.

I walked into GNC to get a pull up bar, and found ISOPURE (you can just do a search on their website to look at the label). They have low carb and ZERO carb options, and the recommendation is to mix it with water.

I really like the flavor of the strawberry one. It sells for about $60, but has been discounted to $25 for a 22 serving container.

Look at the label, as it has NO carbs, almost NO fat, low cholesterol. The only thing it has in average amounts is Sodium. One shake (two scoops in water) contains 50g of protein - 100% of the daily requirement.

Just a recommendation. I have already gone back to purchase two more containers while the sale price is valid.

I too love the Isopure, I never stray from it. I always use the vanilla (zero carb, zero sugar, 50g protein) and add frozen blueberries(super antioxidants) and half a bananna. But I do use 1 cup of skim milk instead of water, cuz I like the shakes creamier than what water provides, plus I want the calcium and the carbs from the milk. They also sell Isopure in ready to drink bottles at health stores - - still no carbs and loads of protein!

hi all my messed up blood sugar brothers and sisters. this is my 1st thread.
i'm looking to put on the weight i've lost during the year i must have had diabetes and didn't know what was wrong with me.
the doc is worried about my high sugar levels but i've probably had that for the past year and i feel completley fine.
what i am woried about is that you can see my bloody ribs!
from this forum protien seems to be o.k to go alongside my weight lifting, which is good because i've been taking that for months.
do you think weight gain will be o.k too?
any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I recently, this morning, started drinking GNC's AMP Wheybolic 60 protein powder. I am only using one scoop, compared to 3 suggested on the pkg. The calories are low as is the carbs, but protein is like 20 grams. I bought the vanilla and it tasted really good. Gonna test here i a bit to see what it's done to my bs. The pkg. suggests 3 scoops of powder after workout, but I'm using it for my breakfast smoothie base. The guy at GNC said to just use one scoop for this and the bad will last 3x's as long and is a good meal replacement. We'll see.

Anyone with first hand experience with this product I'd love your input. :D

My whey powder states on the package, "Not a meal replacement." I suspect only because it does not have 33% of the RDA of carbs ... or fat.

I have been using it 2x/day, mixed into soy milk. But I also eat a lot of other stuff ...

Ok, I have tested 2 hours after drinking this stuff, AMP. I was 103 fasting then it rose to 118 post. Not bad but not real happy I guess. I mixed the powder with 4 ozs. of 2% milk and 4 ozs. of water. Was very tasty! I imagine I would have been lower if I had exercised too, but I didn't. The testing goes on...

Was probably the milk sugar - it raises me.

Yeah what I was thinking too. Next time I'll use plain water.

If you are just a plain vanilla vegetarian, you can use whey protein, but you might want to try a soy protein instead (I'm partial to Super Green Pro-96 Soy Protein - it has chlorella in it and all sorts of other goodies, in a vegan formula)

No, you do not have to be working out to use protein powders. They are often mentioned in 40/30/30 (and other low-carb) diet regimens as a way for people to get enough protein into three meals a day, to balance out the carbs.
You might be feeling tired if you are not taking in enough protein -- many experts recommend .5 g or protein per pound of body weight per day -- protein powder could help you reach this goal, should you adopt it.

Another reason, other than psychological reasons (worrying that you are not getting enough nutrition), might be that you are not varying your diet enough to add in enough Omega 3 fats and vitamins and minerals from the fruit, vegetables, legumes, and raw nuts and seeds you consume. If you think that this might be a distinct possibility, then consider taking a vegetarian multi-vitamin -- you can find a number of different brands in a health food store.

If you feel better taking Vitamin B12 supplements, do it.

And rmeember Metformin (if you are on it) can deplete B12 or mess with absorption too!
