Wow, my first posting in Exercise....kind of excited about it because it means I am taking it more seriously. There's a free rowing class Saturday at Lady Bird Lake in Austin where they teach you the basics and put you in a boat with 7 other people to try it out. I drive over the bridge twice a day and look enviously at all the folks out there rowing, so I'm giving it a try. Is anyone else a casual rower....if so, any pointers?

Also, finally bought the coaster/cruiser bike I've been wanting for years - complete with the wicker basket. I am enjoying it around the neighborhood.

I live along a river. Every summer I see these rowers and kayakers go up and down the river. One day (about 4 weeks ago) while out on my regular run, I saw a huge blue tent by the river. The blue tent was manned by a group of elderly folks giving rowing lessons.

For the equivalent of $5 every lesson you learn and practice rowing. You start with a rowing machine and then graduate to the boat. You row with 4-5 (I think) other people. At the end of summer, there is a rowing competition. The lessons are given at various times every weekend.

My husband and I interested and will sign up for a few lessons. The experienced rowers' advice to me was just to have fun and use the strongest sunblock I can find. :)

rowing is great fun!

When I was younger I lived on a lake and was out on our row boat every day; I now live in a city, but I still go back to my original home in the summers.

Thanks, guys! I'm really looking forward to it and hope it works out to be a new regular thing for me. I paddled a kayak once but that was many years ago.
