I was 238 before I was diagnosed..lost 30 lbs in two weeks and came outta the hospital 208..got my appetite back and was eating pretty normal..put on 25lbs in a week..I knew this was gonna happen cuz my body was starving and once I started eating again I knew it would go up..the next week I was down to 210..still on the same diet..I went back up to 230 over a couple weeks..Now 2 months later (out of the hospital) I am down to 200 and am still losing weight..Im not complaining about the weight loss..but I just wanna know am I constantly going to have to deal with weight gain/loss like this or will I at some point stay the same weight.
Thank You,
Kurt

Hi, Kurt. A bit more info would be helpful.
I assume you're on insulin because it says you're type 1, right?
What are your blood sugar readings? If your blood sugar is still running high, you may be "peeing off he weight" as your body tries to rid itself of the excess sugar. If that's the case, concentrate on getting your blood sugar leveled out - eliminate "white" foods (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread, flour, sugar) if you haven't already done so. Have you already done that?

Though I don't know what your blood sugars are, I'll throw my experience in. I was 137.5 lbs when diagnosed, down from 160 lbs (I'm 5'11" so I looked like a stick), and after treating with insulin and going on a "normal diet" (I didn't do carb-restrictive, just made sure to eat specific portion sizes and keep my sugars reasonably under control, which I was able to pull off well) my weight jumped back up to 157. I was hungry all the time for a while and my weight dropped down a bit, but much of this had to do with me having been used to getting half of my daily caloric intake through sugary soft drinks (I was hungry cause I was only eating half what I used to eat!). After a time my metabolism adjusted and my weight stabilized around 156 lbs.
I did end up dropping down to 145 pounds again that Christmas because of all the tempting sweets and treats. An appointment with my pediatric diabeetus docs sorted that out and I put the weight back on again (it was water weight).
So some fluctuation is normal in the beginning, but if your sugars are NOT reasonably under control (i.e. you're over 180-200 mg/dl very often) you may just be suffering from cyclical dehydration (i.e. you lose some weight and don't feel as good so you start drinking more water subconsciously then eating a bit better, then you feel better and start eating a bit worse and lose the weight again, etc).
Also, perhaps you are using a scale which isn't very accurate? :) I figured out that my current one can vary a bit (only by a couple of pounds), so do some checking around online to make sure there aren't a lot of complaints about your scale being a piece of junk!
