Hi! I have been participating in a early morning boot camp for 6 months. The problem I am having is that I will start with a normal BS (90-120) and spike to over 250 within 1/2 hour of beginning. It typically will drop pretty quickly after cessation of excercise, so I don't treat as I then run low. We do interval training in bootcamp - heavy duty cardio mixed with weights and ab work. Any ideas on how to control this so I don't have to quit doing the cardio once I spike? I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Are you eating anything before the exercise. Your body is sensing a lack of fuel, Liver then pumps out glyco.

I am not eating in the morning - I get up at 5am and class is at 5:30am. Should I be eating something?

you could be getting a high sugar becuase your are not eating
your body will produce sugar if needed.

Have some egg whites and toast then bring some gatorade just in case your sugar drops.

I Mix gatorade with my water 40/60 when I work out cause I had problems with lows during working out

I don't get the spike during exercise (I trend downward), but I'm noticing a spike after excercising (typically running for 20-40 minutes) which also coincides with eating breakfast. However, on days I don't exercise my BG doesn't spike eating the same food, but when I do, it pops up over 200.

I'm trying to bolus after exercise but delaying breakfast for about 15 minutes. Good luck with finding the right routine.

Today I woke up high (198) and bolused to correct down to 120 at 5am. I did not spike at all during the work out - in fact, I dropped to 58 by 7am (boot camp 5:30-6:30 & 1/2hr weights). It seems like I am producing sugar when I start out normal - so maybe 15g of carbs & a protein at 5am with no bolus if I wake up with a normal bs? What do you think?

Hi,
I do similar workouts with my trainer and have gone through the same thing with the craziness of highs and lows. Over time, with really careful notes on both of our parts, we have figured out that a small shot of humalog before we begin and keeping my heart rate above a certain number through the heavy parts keeps me stable during and usually after the workout. I'd suggest doing a lot of testing-- before and during the workout and looking for trends.
