Hello,
I'm new to forums so I'm hoping I'm doing this right. I just wanted to say I am so blessed and happy I found this site. I will be starting insulin at my next dr's visit in July and am very very concerned with weight gain since that's what my dr said to expect. I thought it was inevitable. But your posts have given me hope. I try low carb - not too successfully - but will certainly be going back to that way of eating. Thank you for all your insights.

Welcome Kdhoney! You'll have to keep us posted on your experiences with starting insulin, how you feel and how much better your control becomes.

I need to gain weight. Why do some folks when using insulin have a weight gain problem? Are they using it as a license to eat whatever they want?
I don't under stand..someone please explain this to me.

Thanks David

Insulin will help store excess glucose (carbs) as fat, so there is a tendency for weight gain in most people.

I was fortunate enough to experience the opposite though, as many here have. I actually dropped weight - significant weight - while on insulin. I dropped around 85 lbs now in less than a year, but if I used my insulin to cover my carbs, it would have never happened. Insulin + low carb worked very well for me. Insulin can't store the glucose it's not getting as fat.

For BG control, I think it's important to eat carbs to cover the amount of insulin you are taking rather than the other way around. You might be able to decrease your insulin doing it this way and you might shed the pounds too.

As the weight comes off, I became less resistant, needed less medicine, numbers came down. Just as it's a slippery slope when we fail with this thing, for me at least, everything started working together and falling into place nicely.

It's not easy, but it's certainly doable.

Glad you've chosen to join DF, kdhoney....!

Don't be off-put by the idea of injecting insulin...(It's a good thing). However, keep in mind that you shouldn't "feed" your insulin. You'll find that it's much easier with it than without.

I had no issues with weight gain when I started on insulin and 2 years later still weigh within 5 lbs. I also recommend against "feeding" your insulin. Learn to cover your intake of food and eat sensibly. You'll do great and welcome to DF!
