Anyone out there still able to eat Subway without the spike of BG? I have not ate there since I was dx'd but my fav was 6 inch club (ham, turkey and roast beef) on wheat with cheddar cheese, pickles, mustard and lettuce :) Not sure if it would cause a problem with my BG now but I am thinking about testing it out.

I have tested subway vs my local supermarket subs and subway is ok for me. Supermarket subs spike me. I ask for the bread with the most fiber and have a turkey sub, 6 inch.

Im only 2 weeks into my diabetic life, i WOULD SAY TRIAL AND ERROR ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS. You wont know till you try things out. Reading this forum has already helped me. Take your bm, eat, then take it again pre prandial 2 hrs ( after eating ) a rise of 2-3 would indicate to me ( personally ) that things were ok. Every one is different though depending on the dosage of insulin and the regime etc.

Ditch the bread and order the sandwich as a salad. That's a great option at Subway.

I find that Subway is just a glorified sandwich shop that's loaded with carbs and practice fast food like Mc Donald's.
I make my own at home. ;):D

I can eat subway. I either get the 3" kids sandwich or the six inch on whole grain bread. The mix of carbs, protein and fat seems to work for me, but I can't have chips with it.
Has anyone checked the nutrition info on Subway.
I wouldn't go near the place at the carb levels they're running

I don't really have a problem with Subway. I've switched from burger joints over to Subway and Chick-Fil-A. Yummy. :)

Same here, but be careful of some of the dressings. Honey Mustard tastes great, but it has lots of sugar. Ranch works well though.

I'm pretty much an "oil only" salad eater, unless I see the label or have my Clinistix along.
I can only get away with subway if I am really busy. Then I go for the child's menu or just a salad. Subway is not really my friend.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you!

Sadly, no.
Subway spikes me above 200 for a good 3 or 4 hours. It's like they pour sugar into their bread. And I try to get wheat!
Only thing that hits me worse is pita bread.

They have a menu option that lets you order any sandwich as a salad (as in, "NO BREAD"). You get the meat and cheese that would have gone into a sandwich over lettuce, and can add the other toppings (bell peppers, olives, onions, jalapenos, pepperoncinis, tomatoes, etc.) just as you would to with a sandwich. While some of their salad dressings can be carby, you can have the thing splashed with olive oil, instead.

Hi there. I travel quite a bit by car, and I'm sometimes in a pinch for something quick and nourishing to eat (I'm usually prepared). I've noticed that if I order a 6" whole wheat turkey & provolone sub, double the meat, and fill it with the veggies, oil and vinegar, it makes only the smallest spike. :) This is usually later in the day, when carbs aren't so shocking to my system and it seems the extra protein/fat with the double meat mitigates the carb effect. It's worth testing it out...BUT it's imperative that one NOT give in to the 12" size. Proportion is everything. I was horrified at the difference in my glucose reading two hours after that one... Forget the chips; not even worth it.

What do you usually order at Chick-Fil-A? Haven't been there since diagnosed with type 2.
Thanks.

I'll either order nuggets or a chicken fil a (no bun) and a side salad or a fruit cup, depending on what else I've had to eat that day. Yummy! :)

I can't do subway, but in a pinch, the salad option sounds feasible. I do like their dressing, so I guess I would do that minus the meat. I don't think their meat is of the best quality and a bit on the salty side. However, like Josselyn says, sometimes you get in a pinch.
The nutritional facts are an eye opener.

The thing with subway is not what's in the roll, It's the roll!!!! :eek:So I might as well have a megga sandwich at home. I can remember having a foot long and the BG's are at Pluto. :(
So the home is better with my own sandwich shoppe. :o And much much cheaper. ;):D
Jimmy John's has the "Unwich" sandwich. Instead of bread, the sandwich is wrapped in romaine lettuce.

I find Subway to be pretty much inedible. Their food is horrible and $5 is overpriced for one of their hoagies. The only time I'll even think of eating a hoagie is when I am in my native Philadelphia, which is rare sadly, and those hoagies tend to spike my BS. Part of that might be because I always eat a foot long. I don't eat fast food, but rather sample local fares which are usually much much better.

For a great philly sandwich, I use the low-carb wraps with steakums, onions and peppers....add a little cheesewhiz to the mix and you're all set.

I make wraps all of the time when I am not on the road - probably one of the easiest things to make. Usually I use some grilled chicken or tuna or some lunch meats. I won't eat a cheesesteak unless it is the real deal.

I've actually never had the "real-deal," and it would probably ruin my steak-ums forever if I did;). I don't know what i'd do w/o the wraps though. Like you, I do chicken, steak and tuna regularly.

Same here. I usually get my tortillas/wraps from Whole Foods when I am home, which is rare. They have a great selection of wraps - my favorite is sun-dried tomato. 44 carbs a piece.

I love the sun-dried tomato, and have also found a spinach jalapeno once or twice at our local "Fresh Market." My most recent find has been an "Ole Extreme Wellness," 9-inch whole wheat tortilla that has only 17 carbs, 12 fiber, so basically 5 net carbs. It's not as good as the "flavored/seasoned" wraps, but I can have two when having fajitas w/o a blood sugar spike...can't do that with the seasoned ones.
Still, the jalapeno/spinach was a great flavor. MMMMMM

The wraps I'd like to find in a low-carb version are wonton wraps. There's a nifty little dessert that can be made with toasted wonton wrappers, layered with s/f pudding & drizzled or dusted with a little s/f syrup or cocoa. Kind of a pseudo napoleon . . . :D :D :D
But a regular little 3½" wonton wrap is 5g of carbs all by its wee self! So even using three to stack the dessert adds up to 15g awreddy! Help!

Granny, why not try dusting brushing a warm/toasted tortilla (cut into quarters or halves)with butter and splenda, maybe with a little cinnamon as well so it will stick to another one and add the other ingredients and see how that works. I know it wouldn't be quite the same, but it sounds good...a 3 9 inch low carb tortillas would only be 15 carbs and would be several servings if you halved or quartered them first.

I think that wouldn't be half bad, Linda . . . thanks for the suggestion. Plus you reminded me that part of this little "napoleon" IS a sprinkle of Splenda on each layer! Heh!
We use the no-carb lo-carb tortila, fry them crispy in sunflower oil, Heres where the Stevia soars, Stevia layered on top then the cin. They are good, Theres a mex name for them, but I am not with it today.

Subway is ok for me. Usually get the footlong blt with the 9 grain oat bread. No spikes as long as I take the right amount of insulin.
