View Full Version : Can Marijuana show up in diabetic testing?

So I gave in too peer pressure and decided to try marijuana, it really didn't live up to all the hype, and I can assure you having the piece of mind that I am clean is a lot more pleasing than the couple hour buzz from marijuana, and I don't think i'm interested in trying it again...
However I was wondering if any of the blood work done for diabetes can show if I have done marijuana or not... I'm referring to the A1c tests, whatever tests they do with the small sample of blood every time I go for a check up, and whatever tests that they usually have diabetics do when they send them in for blood work... Basically are there any possible tests my doctor can have me take besides a drug test that can show If i have had marijuana? If not do diabetic doctors usually have a marijuana check done when they do blood tests?
How long does marijuana stay in ones blood?
It should not show up in routine tests done for D.
But ... munchies could! ;)
I would not worry too much. Medical confidentiality is on your side too. Be honest with your MD if anything looks awry, it was a youthful indiscretion, right?

It's not really the MD im worried about, but I am only 17 so my parents would be told, and I don't want my parents to have that kind of perspective of me... I know some may feel the parents should know, but I am mature enough to make my own decisions and I have concluded that this was a poor one, and I have learned from my mistake to not do it again, however I would still like the peace of mind to know it would stay at just that... Do you know if there are any tests that marijuana might affect when concerning diabetes?

Would your MD tell your parents? They do not always, and I think woudl discuss with YOU first if they did find anything.
I do not think pot would affect any diabetes testing, no. Especially if it was a one-time thing.

Well everytime I see my diabetes doctor it's with my parents, there's never a one on one time, so chances are my parents woul find out at the same time as me... Oh man, am I never doing this again.
How long ago did you smoke, and whe ndo you get bloodwork done? I seriously would not worry about this.
Msot MDs do not bother to test unless there is some reason or liek your parents ask (but at 17!? Nah!) and if you are as mature and conscientious as you sound there would be no reason!

I smoked yesterday, I took 3 hits, I actually don't have any major bloodwork scheduled and we usually do that at a lab and not at the doctors office... I'm not entirely sure when my next appointment is, but It seems like it's been the 3 month period and if the pattern follows they should be calling to confirm the appointment soon, and I'm assuming It will be next week... Now this is just the normal appointment where they do the blood test by pricking my finger... I'm not sure exactly what they test for in that one, and if marijuana could show up in it... My bloodwork is usually 1-2 weeks after the doctors appointment.

I'm trying not too but the thought is forever lingering in my head that the doctor is going to do some test that will show if THC is in my blood or not.

We make decisions everyday of our lives and not all of them are the right ones. Especially the ones we make when we are teenagers. Sounds like you learned that your decision was a poor one. Now decide to never do it again ant let go. Guilt is eating at you. Your secret is safe-just learn from it and all will be fine.:)
Take the pressure off yourself and have a great day!

haha, well i'm not sure if i'm safe or not... Life's pretty good right now, starting college soon and all that, but you have no idea how my parents finding out that I've tried marijuana would affect my life, they are very anti-drug, and I think it would take a long while to get that "criminal" stamp off of my face if they were to find out... I just really hope that there's nothing in diabetic testings that will show the marijuana and I can just check this one off of the list and move on... I'm probably going to worry about it up until my next appointment and the results from the next blood test... uhg..

Don't worry about it.. it's an expensive test and they have to specifically test for it. Unless you're paying them to test for it, they're not going to.

The doctor has never had me done a specific drug test before, and I doubt she will now, but I'm worried that there might be some other more common test that they will do that might also show if marijuana is in the body.

Trust me, and this isn't BS, or a line to make you feel better. Fifteen years from now, you will look back and laugh at this very moment. That is a rock solid guarantee.
You will probably even tell your parents at some point around there as well.
Typical blood work done which you are concerned about very rarely ever screens for drugs.
Relax, it's done, you may as well just roll with it...

Haha, i'm going to worry about this very rarely until it's all said and done with, and possibly even after...

Ahhh good ol paranoia. The only test that will show up positive for pot use is the test specificaly for marijuana consumption. There is no reason to order that test unless it is required by law, insurence, policy, or relevent to treatment. Doctors have enough to do without ordering expensive tests for no reason or relevance to their diagnosis. :secruity: Last time I checked, smoking pot does not cause diabetes.:canabis:

See this gives me some piece of mind that It won't come up as long as they are not specificially looking for drugs, are you sure this is true? If you are that will take a load off of my shoulders, haha.
I just took my 14 year old daughter for her physical and she is given the option of whether she wants me in there or not...next year they said I'm out in the waiting room. So, as a 17 year old, you probably have the option of seeing your doctor without parents present.

Did you write this while under the influence? Relax. Endocronologist do not test for the stickie ickie.
Relax Ratchet, you are safe.
If there is reason for your parents to worry and they demand that your doctor order it, it will show up. The only possible way it will show up on any blood work is through a drug test. So unless you are getting screened for pre-employment or you or your parents direct the physician to order it, you are safe. He's not going to just order it and it's not going to show up on a chem panel, an A1c, a glucose, a liver panel, a thyroid panel or any of that. Just on a drug screen.
Plus, three hits isn't going to stay in your system (blood wise) for a very long time. The half-life of THC (active agent in marijuana) is at worst, 10 days, can be as little as 1 day. So for every ten days since you touched it, the amount in your blood will be cut in half. I can't say how much you had in your system because it varies based on weight, metabolism and the type of weed you smoked, but my guess is that three hits put you just above detectable level. After 20 days, I'm sure you'll be below a detectable level anyway (as long as you don't smoke any more).
Hair is a different story, it stays in there longer.
You are safe, there is no real need to worry.

surprised that this has not been mentioned.
lol, I would be more worried about your parents seeing your posts on the internet....
dont worry about your dr; they would not test for pot unless they had a real reason to.

Ratchet, Chill! As others have stated, it is a specific test and costs about $35. Doctors know that insurance will not cover this test and therefore do not order it unless directed by law enforcement and they pay that bill. While some the components of Marijuana do stay on the body for about 30 days, tests after 32 hours are generally not considered by law to be valid or reliable.
So, I would not be worried about this first indiscretion being discovered, unless you parents read this forum.
