View Full Version : Cheap Diet Fizzy Drinks in UK

We are having loads of trouble trying to find diet fizzy drinks. My doctor has asked me to cut down my caffeine, so I only have one glass of diet coke at lunch, and the rest of the time I drink other diet, or low-sugar, or "no sugar added" fizzy drinks. But they all have carbs in!!! Only the diet coke is carb free, and I hate having to drink other stuff that will push my sugars up.

I have one cup of coffee in the morning, and the rest of my day I drink water or a fizzy drink. I used to drink loads of orange juice, but that's out of the question now, and I can't stand tea, and I can't stand squash drinks (not sure what they're called in the US/Canada) and I don't really want caffeine free coffee, as I prefer cold drinks during the day.

So.........please can anyone in the UK suggest diet drinks that are carb-free, and most importantly, that are not expensive. ALL of the regular diet drinks seem to be more costly than non-diet, but we are on a very limited budget and it's driving me crazy. I like orange, lemon, pineapple & grapefruit mix type drinks - but they all have a carb percentage. Should I just drink them anyway?

Arrrrrrrgh, I hate this disease, and I hate how it costs my family so much money to keep me us all on a healthy diet

Hello Sue,
I use a diet squash drink that I like, (like Robinsons for example) and then mix with a diet own brand lemonade..........works for me

Hi Sue

Have you had a look at the label on Supermarket brands fizzy soft drinks (i.e. in Tescos, Sainsburys, Waitrose etc) to see if they are carb free?

What diet drinks do you like that contain carbs? I drink pepsi max which fis trace carbs per 100 ml.

You could also buy squash - we buy Robinsons Special R, apple & blackcurrant flavour (1.1 carbs per 100 ml concentrate) & you coud add sparkling water to it instead of still water. Tescos do 6 x 1.5 litre bottles of spakiling water for £1.49.

Hope this helps.

Hi Linda and Willow

I'm so sorry I didn't thank you sooner for your suggestions - my daughter was sick (physically :( ) a couple of hours after I posted my question, and has been off school the last couple of days, and I actually forgot that I'd posted the question (DUH!!!)

I like the idea of using diet squash and adding diet lemonade to it - hadn't thought of that, so thank you for sharing the idea.

Willow, it's really difficult to check all the labels, especially from Tesco, as we only ever do an on-line shop from them and they often don't have all the info on the website - which is a real bummer when you're trying to buy the "right" foods and drinks!! We have a Co-Op and Sainsbury's near us, hubby does all the shopping (lucky me LOL) and he's having a really hard time finding any diet drinks that have only a trace of carb. I was drinking a lot of diet coke, which is trace carb, but now have to have the de-caffinated brand, which is more expensive :(

Why is it so much more expensive to eat and drink healthily? grrrrrrr, this is an on-going gripe of mine!!!

Thanks again for the ideas :D

Sainsburys has got :

Sainsbury's Apple and Blackcurrant Crush, No Added Sugar 2ltr

Sainsbury's Limeade, Sugar Free 2ltr {can't tell if this one is fizzy}

Tango Orange Sparkling Drink, Orange, Diet 2ltr

Apparently, the Light fizzy drinks by Fanta use aspartame and thus should be acceptable

BTW, the Galaxy 400g Block looks very good indeed. As does the Green and Black's Organic Dark Chocolate 100g and the Nestlé Double Cream Chocolate Block 150g looks interesting too.

The selection of pizzas isn't too impressive though. Much like what we have at the store nearest us though.

... Just out of curiosity, if a drink is a diet drink, therefore no sugar... shouldn't it be carb free as well? Now I'm all mixed up!

Sue, caffeeine, that's the stuff!! the word only makes my toes curl. Ever tried Diet Coke Decaf? Yes I know, how pathetic is that  But I find it works for me when I really want a fizzy drink.

Recently, I've been drinking lots of 'Slightly sparkling Spring Water Drink', made by Tesco. The cherry & cranberry one rocks!! Just checked the carbs : 0.6 g per 200 ml. I also enjoy San Pellegrino sparkling natural mineral water. When I feel daring, I add just a bit of juice to it, usually pur unsweetened orange juice.

RZ, you sound like you ARE in UK at the moment!! Sainsbury's. Thought it was a church when I first moved here. Understood Saint Burys

Sorry Sue I can't think of any other drinks that r carb free.

But does anyone know what the deal is with sugar free red bull? Surely it defeats the point of the drink? Red bull and vodka used to be my favourite drink, so is this sugar free stuff really sugar free? Maybe it's just full of caffeine. ((erelevant to this thread i know, sorry))

Sue, Ive had diet fanta b4 and it tastes, to me anyway, just the same as the normal stuff... it didnt affect my levels at all. I dont know what the cafefeine content is tho.

Have you considered something like Kool Aid? I used to drink lots of Diet Pepsi but now prefer Kool Aid sweetened with Sugar Twin. It's a lot cheaper, too.

lg,
You're much smarter than I am. I can never get the correct amount of Sugar-Twin and the Kool-Aid always comes out --Blech

However, when I use Splenda, it comes out "Jes' Fine."

But I think she's looking more for Sody Pop type of drinks.

Pfft! Their supposedly 'diabetic chocolate' is a joke. Checked carbs the last time I was there and a 'normal' chocolate bar has less carbs than a 'diabetic chocolate' one. So now whenever I want to live dangerously, I go for the truffles!

Sue........

You can buy '''diet caffeine free''' coke from tesco online for the same price as a bottle of normal or diet coke.

I've just spent ages trying to find this post - I couldn't remember which forum I put it in

Thank you all sooooooooooo much for the replies (but who mentioned chocolate???? grrrrrrr). Laura, thanks for the tip about tesco - we do shop online with them occasionally, I'll make sure that next time we do, that we stock up.

I've been nursing a sick child all week, first she was literally being sick, that turned into a cold, then a really bad cough, then laryngitis. She's better now, and hopefully back at school tomorrow, whilst I've got her cold. I'm feeling really pi**ed off, because it only seems like a couple of weeks ago that I got rid of my last cold. This one already feels worse, I've no energy, and feel really shakey on my feet.

I'm supposed to be seeing my dietician on Tuesday, but will have to cancel. I only just thought of asking her if she could recommend any drinks. I've looked at the fizz we've got and the "light" ones have anything up to 1 gram of carbs per glass. I think I was over-reacting a bit, cos although the diet coke has zero carbs, I've not noticed any increase in my numbers when drinking the fizz with a smidgen of carbs, so I think I'll carry on as I have been.

Thank you again - I know I'm always apologising for not keeping up with my posts....I think it's just a really bad habit I have.

Hope everyone else is feeling great - and not too snowed under!!

Hope your daughter is okay, Sue. Sounds like she's had a bad time of it recently. Hope you have got rid of the cold too.

It's freezing outside - roll on warmer (but not too warm) weather!

BeadieJay

thanks Willow - and I agree about the weather, it's freezing indoors as well as out!!!

My daughter was better - she went back to school yesterday, was fine all day long, then about 9:00 last night she threw up again. She was fine after that, and asked to go to school this morning. Then we got a phonecall after lunch asking to pick her up as she didn't feel well, so I guess she'll be home for a few more days. I don't know why she keeps throwing up. Poor kid - she always seems to have something wrong with her :(

We have our own little coughing chorus though, which would be fun if it wasn't so annoying!!!

I hope you're keeping well - and, yes, roll on the warmer weather.
