Hi to All fellow sufferers of this insidious disease diabetes:the Silent Killer.
I wanted to ask when you are supposed to take the lantus and why. AM or PM, upon wake up or before going to sleep?
I understand Humalog is to be taken before meals.

Thanks in advance for your advice/experiences. I know I'm supposed to get that info from my Doc, but don't want to go back to see her so soon, plus it's a $35.00 copay. In addition, they are super busy. We live some 45 minutes from her office. She works in a Specialty facility (Jones Center for Diabetes). I think that's what it's called. Private practice, but diabetes is all they do.
Thank you for info and I realize this is probably not the right way to get that info. I just want to hear it coming from people who actually take it, as opposed to a Doctor (practically ALL doctors) whom I have difficulty believing, seeing and trusting. (not her fault-I like her personally).
Best wishes to all,
David Dean

Hello David and welcome to DF.

Many people vary the times at which they take Lantus, however most take it at night. It's supposed to be a 24 hour dose. Some find that they have better control by "splitting" the dose. The only way to find what works best for you is to experiment. But remember that when changing things, to give a few days for the effects of the change to set in.

As far as the Humalog, yes, take it before meals. But remember to test, test, test. Testing is the only way to know how foods/insulins effect us.

Is the center you use called Joslin? Joslin has been the forerunner in care and management for a while now.

I take my Lantus all at once and usually in the late afternoon (3-4pm). That works well for me. The Humalog, I take before meals... usually about 15 minutes before unless I'm running low, in which case I will take right before I start to eat.

I take my Lantus whenever the h*ll I feel like. ;)

Naw. I find it works, for me, for about 18-20hrs, then leaves me in a basal dead zone. I'd rather take it in the evening so that I know it's working overnight and in the morning, and during the day when I'm not really eating, it can slow down between doses. Humalog picks up the slack for me there.

You can take Lantus at any time of day you like, provided you take it at the same time each day and leave a 24 hour period between each injection. Personally I take mine at 7pm ever day. I don't take mine at night because I might be out and it's an extra pen to carry around, and I don't take it in the morning because I like a lie-in on weekends!
