Heres my suggestion for the day.

If you go to a drive through and order a drink thats diet but made to taste like regular (eg - COKE ZERO), make sure to ask them if they gave you the right drink, because you wont necessarily know by the taste. If they didnt give you the diet kind and you drink it anyway unknowingly, you'll get home like I did a few hours later with BG where mine is now at 358. ARGH!

Oh, no! What a bummer!
I think about that every time I order a diet soda.
Hope you can get back down within range soon!

I have heard, though I've never tried it, that regular soda will read "hi" on most meters, if you want to lose a strip to check. If I had any regular soda around, I'd try it..

I can't tell either. Luckily last time I ordered a soda at a restaurant I had a friend who can tell (but still likes diet) with me, because she took a sip & said they gave me the wrong soda. When I tasted the both of them one after another I could tell she was right, so we just switched drinks.

The next refill, she told the waiter just to give both of us diet...he brought 2 regulars...we think the hoses were crossed somewhere. We brought it to our attention & he got some diets from another machine & they tasted right finally.

There's a very simple test you can carry out to determine whether your drink is diet or not, and you don't need any equipment.

Simply dunk your fingers into the drink so that they're all wet, and then let them dry naturally.

If your fingers are all really sticky, you've got regular. If they're not, you've got diet.

Another test you can do is sup a mouthful and swill it all round your mouth. Once you've got rid of it, your mouth will probably feel a lot furrier or stickier inside if it's regular.

here's my solution. don't go to these sorts of so-called "restaurants".

there is no reason to.

Or you can ORDER regular and bolus... They never give you diet when you order regular. ;)

I'm lucky enough to be able to taste the difference even between Zero and regular. But if I'm uncertain i either test with my meter or take a mouthful and see if my teeth feels like they're melting:T Faster and less sticky than doing the sticky test with fingers lol

Someone here suggested not ordering soda unless it is in a can, After being unsure once, and simply not drinking it, I think this will be my new rule.

Better yet, get unsweetened ICED TEA. No question then.

I am very paranoid about fast food mixups, having been a vegetarian for > 30 years and endured meat in my burritos a ... few times.

A few years ago, a co-worker, when he was going to make a new batch of coffee, he would empty the regular coffee into the decaf pot, - bad boy, he didn't know of the consequences for the people that had to be on decaf coffee. like for high blood pressure.
Beware.

If we are making suggestions....
I suggest don't do diet. It does not satisfy, ever.
Hence, you drink more and it then becomes problematic.

What with the news today about acetaminophen being a liver killer, I am not too keen on what the fda approves. Our former goofball leader rumsfeld jammed the fda approval of aspartame - check it out - it is a real story out there... on the web... and, of course, everything on the web is the truth. :T

I don't trust my health with the fda at all. Real food is for real people and I count myself a real person. I doubt if any of our euro members do diet - it is worse than gm and euro does not do gm.

The one touch ultra smart won't test it either but if you lance then add a small bit of the drink to your drop it will register...I usually test the drop without drink first as a control then test with the drink.

Not true, GM starch has been commonplace in Europe for some time and there's an abundance of diet soft drinks in Europe, usually sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame K.

Acetaminophen has been known to be a "liver killer" for, uhm, ever. But sometimes (always, actually), the FDA approves drugs DESPITE side effects. Otherwise we'd have no drugs approved, since ALL have side effects.

The issue with Acetaminophen is people who go out and take 3 different drugs with Acetaminophen in it, and then kill their liver from their triple dose they just took. There's nothing wrong with taking 2 extra strength Tylenol. There is something wrong with taking that, plus Vicodin, plus sinus medicine with Acetaminophen in it.

blah that's happened to me...I usually never get soda from fast food places...all they have are the diet cokes which taste terrible (although coke zero does taste a bite better). I usually get diet orange soda...... When I got sick last year though and I was malnourished I would drink regular soda and bolus all the time without a problem...kinda got me addicted for a while but now I'm just back to the diet stuff -_- i just like the insulin-freeness lol

Yea, I'm not too terribly big on fast food lately either, but we were down at the beach and it was handy. And I dont want to use my meter to test my drinks because the one Ive got interacts wirelessly with my pump. I've really cut down on soda, but I must say that Ive probably had 3 regular sodas in the 9 years I've been diagnosed. They just taste so nasty to me now. Like carbonated pancake syrup.

Not sure what you mean by that. I test drinks with my Ultrasmart all the time. A diet drink will give you "Error 4."

i just tested a "zero coke" on my xceed meter and it said "LO".

Hmm... well I got ahold of some regular coke, I tested with my Bayer Contour, and it gave me a reading of 11!! I tested some Gatorade too and that said 69 (it's not sweeter than the soda, so I'm not sure what's up with that - maybe the electrolytes mess with it)? So I tried the coke again and it said 26... then tried some crystal light (no diet soda around) and it said "LO". Yeah, I don't know what to think.. lol.. but I think I would trust diet to read "LO".

Tested myself and got 123 :)

BTW, I agree about regular tasting like carbonated pancake syrup.. I normally can tell the difference, but if you get a fountain soda with less syrup than normal, it can be difficult to tell the difference right off.

I avoid diet drinks like the plague as they have caffeine which screws up my bg. Diet lemonade is the only drink I have for a treat once in a while. My favourite drink is herbal teas as there are so many and are one of the few things in this world that can't effect my bg even if I overdose on them :D.

Fast food = evil bg spikers :(
