Annoying Insulatard

So lately my insulatard has been acting like fast acting insulin.

At 1030, when I set my first dose with the latard, I go low about 90 minutes later.

Then at 2230, with my last dose of the day, the same thing happens.

Checked my BG last night, 4.3mmol. I can't go to bed with that, so being ûbertired and all, I still had to eat some food before bed.

Is this because of the spiking in the insulatard, or do I just have crazy low resistance?

Near as I can tell, it's an intermediate insulin, right?

What other meds are you taking? Diet? Exercise?

Yea, an internediate insulin. I'm also take NovoRapid, a fast acting one.

I exercise in the gym 4 days a week, and try to stay active the other 3 days. My diet is also pretty good.

I know Insulatard has a spiking profile, but I thought it wouldn't start until about 4 hours from injecting.

It sounds like the Insulatard is spiking - I think it only starts to tail off after 16 hours, so what happens when you inject every 12 is you've got a reasonable amount of Insulatard still working, and then you're adding to it. You're right that Insulatard peaks at about 4 hours but I'd guess at your 13.5 hour mark you simply have too much of it in you.

I had the exact same problem when I was Insulatard and was having 8-9 hypos day and couldn't reduce my TDD without screwing up everything else. There is only so far you can go with Insulatard, especially if you don't have significant dawn phenomenon. Any chance you could switch to Levemir? It uses the same pen and doesn't peak anywhere near as much.

Search for NPH you will find more results ;).

Any chance you could switch to Levemir? It uses the same pen and doesn't peak anywhere near as much.

Lantus is another good option should you need it. Lantus Solo Star disposables are the best Lantus pens I believe.

You have an amazing A1c for someone using NPH, I really doubt there are many who can get such a good result. Have you ever thought of pumping? Would make your life a bit easier as its far more flexible and will help to make your bg a lot more stable at least it did for me.
