I was wondering what foods raise your blood sugar the quickest, Smarties do the trick, but I'm gonna puke if I have to eat another Smartie. I assume it is the dextrose, but I can't find much else with dextrose as the first ingredient. I have been looking on the glycemic index list & see dates at a 105, then I thought I would post a thread to see if someone knows something that tastes good & raise blood sugars quick.

For me a regular soda is quick as is cake frosting. The frosting is cheap and I keep it in the fridge and can take a small or large helping as needed. Also tastes pretty good. Get a flavor you like. :D

French fries, taters, etc.

I can bolus the correct amount, and even a little more because I am aware of how my body reacts to those foods and I still spike, I mean REALLY spike.

Normal pizza crust, pitas, etc, get me high as well, I mean we're talking the ability to snort in clouds high.

It's funny, I can eat ice cream, no problem at all, a few big bowls even, and bolus the minimum, sometimes even less, and the spike is just normal.

I do put a whole one of those Bran Buds single packets on them to slow absorption tho.

I guess they must really work since I started using them around six months ago.

Great tip I guess... And now I know. :D

Pita bread. Man, it'll lift you to the moon and keep you there for hours.

Plain old fashioned milk. 2% milk raises my blood sugar FAST and keeps it up for awhile. Ice cream works, but I like it too much and I will eat it, so I don't keep it around.

For in the pocket or purse or car, I use Starbursts. They are wrapped so they don't get pocket lint. The package has some foil to keep them all together.

Eat the green cheese when yer there, it should slow absorption.

Unless yer kidding about going to the moon.

Were you?

Mashed potatoes get me up. The best thing if i have a mild hypo (3-5) x 18 for usa is gloucose tablets or loucozade, then even things out with some carbs like crisps or peanuts.

If I feel mild hypo at lunch I find beans in tomatoe sauce( 3/4 can) with some low GI bread ( 2-3 slice ) gets me to dinner time.

Fruit is a god send sometimes when there is a little gap in the curve, lol.

For lows - is that the context? Juice works fast as anything for me, apple or tropical (mix) are two good eamples. It would be hopeless if I was to try and just drink a little from a big bottle, I'd overdo it and go high later, so I never have those, instead I always keep small sized juice boxes (15g carbs) around the house, car, in my bag.

I like it because it's pleasant without being too tempting - for example I'm the same with icecream as Nancy, I will just eat too much if it's around. Or chocolate, lollies, sweets, candy, I just don't like having the temptation around. So I don't and life is better. If I really do want to eat those things on some whim, it's better to make a conscious choice, and try to bolus for it successfully, rather than get hypo time linked up with having something I find addictive.

Also, sports glucose powder, from the spoon or in a little water, is a cost effective way of getting a hypo fix that works fast for me. It's pretty much the same stuff as glucose tabs, I keep a bag of it in the kitchen for home lows.

Any soft drink. They kick in within about a minute and they work. It's what I use for treating hypos, because it's fast, effective, and also 'looks' like normal behaviour.

SORRY, I should've clarified, I was trying to find something to eat to raise my blood sugar quickly when I get low. Something fairly portable. I've heard chocolate is not good because it takes so long to absorb.
It really is weird how strong the urge is to eat the ENTIRE gallon of ice cream (or anything else nearby) when you get low.

That's why it can be so helpful to have a hypo strategy that gives you a suitable limited amount, then you check a bit later say 15 min to see if your BG is improved, if not another limited amount. Part of that limit for me is picking something that's pleasant but not addictive or too attractive. I'm likely to pig out on chocolate or icecream, but instead if I have a juice box it's easy to drink, and there's not much more temptation. You obviously need to fight that urge to pig out, as that will lead to the pain of high numbers later on.

Glucose tablets raise me faster than juice and most candy. Smarties work very fast too, but something like hard candy is much slower (maybe because it takes longer to eat!) or even Jelly Bellies. Smarties, SweetTarts and other candy that is basically better tasting glucose tablets works best for me.

Bananas tend to raise my BG very high but I think they take a little longer to work. Also, not as portable as glucose tablets.

The best thing to eat to quickly correct hypoglycemia are glucose tablets that you buy at a drugstore. Eat 3-4 tablets, wait 15 minutes and re-check your BG. This usually is enough but you can eat a few more tablets if your BG is still low.

Orange juice and non-diet sodas are also good, but glucose goes to work immediately and needs no conversion as other sugars such as dextrose, lactose, sucrose, etc. require.

Foods with both sugar and fat, e.g. ice cream, or starch, e.g. potatoes and pasta, work more slowly because the fat and starch slow down the absorption and conversion to glucose. Glycemic Index is the measurement of the relative conversion of foods. Glucose is at the top of the Glycemic Index. That's also why it's used in IV fluids.

Confectioner's sugar or icing sugar workes for me. It's not as granulated so it will get absorbed quicker. And it doesn't taste that good.

Honey is neat too, but tasty :/

Honestly, glucose tablets seem to work the fastest for me and get my BG back to normal within 10 minutes. When my BG is low ANYTHING tastes good! Fruit juice is fairly good too. I'm a chocoholic but chocolate takes quite a while to work for me :(

On the other hand, this means chocolate is a sightly better choice for genuine occasional treats... taking some time means you might be able to devise a way to successfully bolus for it!

Have you tried some of the dark high cocoa varieties with lower carb count? A small serve of that is quite viable for me on quite a regular basis, given correct dosaging! Took me a while to adapt to dark/low sugar now and then (instead of mostly no chocolate), but the process wasn't that hard on me ;)

Funny you should mention the dark chocolate. I find that I much prefer that now to milk chocolate. I tend to have a chunk of chocolate as a bedtime (or middle of the night) snack as the fat content makes it useful to raise my BG somewhat and keep it there for longer.

It's not so useful during a low BG though for the same reason, the fat content means that it takes some time to raise my BG. If I'm struggling with a low I want the most immediate effect possible and find it's the boring glucose tablets that give me that.

Usually carry glucose tablets...cheapest ones are no name ones from Walmart/Kmart/Walgreens. Biggest plus = portability and know what they will do consistently. I just buy the cheaper "jug" and put them in a reusable small dose dispenser...they sell next to the jug in the pharmacy isle.

Have also used 3 hard candies (mints/butterscotch, etc.) = 15 gm of CHO...but, do not work as fast and need to be sure you do not crack a tooth! I tend to keep eating these and raise my BG too much:)

Oh...and I agree...rice (jasmine) raises my BG quickly and hard to get back down even w/ fast acting insulin! Another killer is pizza crust!

Take care:)

Dextrose is an industry name for glucose but you are right about the rest. When I have a low it's all I can do to stop myself from eating the entire tube of tablets which is odd given what they taste like (these are horrible, give me more...)

I use OJ at home (the fresh squeezed/Tropicana/Florida's Natural) and regular soda when not at home. Im a bad diabetic I guess...I never carry emergency glucose with me, as access to a soda machine or C-store or something similar is always available. The exception is when I travel overseas, as I tend to travel outside the city alot.
