I'd like to get some feedback regarding "losing" a site. I'm not sure exactly what that means.

Right now i'm about 30 minutes from going to the ER. My blood sugar was 495 two hours ago. I took a correction bolus from my pump, checked my ketones (160) and retested 30 minutes later. My blood sugar was still 480. I took a bolus via syringe and changed the infusion set (moved the site by about 3 inches). Checked my blood sugar 30 minutes later and it was 408. Called doctor essentially told me to wait a while longer before retesting and continue treating unless there was not a substantial change.

It appears it may a clogged set or mabe "losing" a site. I'm concerned because I've never recorded a blood sugar above 300 since I was diagnosised some years ago. Has anyone experienced this before?

Edited to add: My blood sugar is returning to normal levels (270) so I don't need to go to the ER.
To clarify timeline...
7:00pm BG=495
7:30pm BG=480
8:00pm BG=408
9:30pm BG=270

you dont need to go to the ER...trust meeee....i have had problems with my site before....you have to change your site...trust me from experience...i have freaked out about this before like you ...your blood sugars are going down now...so it had to be the site you had...no cause for alarm...

there is actually a rule that if your blood sugars are above 200 unexplained two times in a row that you should change your site...my pump trainer told me t hat ....just drink alot of water and your ketones will get back to normal once your sugars drop...as fast as you get ketones is as fast as they leave...let me know what happend

Thanks, Gina.

Everything was back to normal then next morning. In retracing my steps I realized I made a series of mistakes that day that led to this.

1) When I took a shower that morning, I disconnected adn forgot to put on the cover cap for the infusion set. I'm sure that caused it to be clogged up.

2) I didn't eat lunch until 2pm that afternoon so I didn't anticipate having to test before that.

3) I didn't test before eating lunch. I assumed I was ok and took a normal bolus and had lunch.

Hard lesson learned. ;)

bigsapper,

I am on the pump too. And I never put the cover cap on my site. Unless I'm away from home. The cover cap you use for when you dissconnect from your pump, when your not home. This way you don't get some one elses germs.

If you think it might because you skipped lunch, then I would test your basal rate. You should be able to skip a meal with out your bg's moving more than 30.

Like Gina said you could of had a bad site. It happens some times.
