Can anyone give me any insight on if it's normal for BS to swing rapidly? For example, I can go from 90's before eating to 160-200 1 hr PP to 80's at 2 hour. Is this considered normal?

I guess it depends what you eat and when,

i see you marked as pre-diabetes, at a wild guess, maybe your ability to create insulin helps bring it back down but it maybe isn't enough to keep the spike out. I really am just speculating though - im new to this stuff.

what do you eat

How many carbs are you eating at one time. I think each carb will raise bg 2-3 points. So if you are eating 50 carbs that could be a 100 pt rise but you are returning to normal quickly so you still have lots of beta cells left to produce insulin and return you to normal. As diabetes progresses your beta cells begin to wear out and spikes will last longer.

As far as what I'm eating, once was grilled chix breasts, baby baker potatoes (alot of carbs, I know now) other time was actually a recipe from a diabetic magazine. It had corn in it though, so I"m guessing that's what caused the spikes. I'd say overall about 40-50 carbs during dinner

Sounds like you are experiencing the same type thing that I do. I go from 90s to 180 in 30 to 40 minutes after eating even a slightly hypo meal. Then drop back within an hour.

I've read that this is NOT normal and is pre-diabetes. Something like no more then a 30 to 40 point change within a two hour period. Supposed to be a nice beta wave, not a spike and crash, spike and crash causing stress on your system. Low glycemic index foods and more frequent, small meals.

Just my little ole two cents as a new "Hypoglycemic" which I maintain is a misnomer as I'm not "low", I'm all over the place :)

Also, (sorry, I type and send too fast), my Endocrinologist agreed with jwags. He said it was actually a good thing my BS came down so fast. Proves "things are still working". Is a warning sign however and thus the 'pre-diabetes'. You want to get and keep your BS in a healthy range to stop stressing your system and try to avoid full blown diabetes. Your body tries to maintain a more consistent range and if you don't help it with a healthy diet and exercise program it will begin to fail and you'll end up staying high.
