Hi Everyone.. I just wanted to give you a small update. I saw my dietician today and it went better than I thought. I found out that I haven't really been eating enough so it had slowed down the process for me to loss weight.

My dietician has agreed and disagreed with some things my endocrin doctor has told me:

1- endocrin doctor wanted me to stay away from carrots and bananas and only hae 1 fruit a day.. 1/2 at a time.

2- dietician says that it is fine for me to eat carrots and bananas and that I shouldn't limit my vegetables and fruits

3- both agreed that a 1200 calorie diet would work for me esp. seeing I need to lose weight.

4- endocrin doctor wants me on low carbohydrate diet, but didn't specify how much.

5- dietician has worked out that I have 30 to 40 carbs per meal.

So I'll have to see how things go. I'm sure things will go well now that I have a eating plan and I'm going to the gym.

Thank you for listening.

Don't forget to test after meals to see what that 30-40 grams of carbs is doing to your BGs. (Low-carb, to many of us, is well under that number. Dr. Bernstein, for example, recommends no more than 6 grams for breakfast and no more than 12 grams for each of lunch and dinner--if you have snacks, he recommends limiting the number of grams of carbs to the amount recommended for the meal the snack follows.)

I'd definitely second what ShuttleBop said. Some dieticians go by old-school thought as to what is "good for you." Your doc said no carrots & no bananas because they cause high blood sugar for many diabetics. Also, 30-40 g of carbs per meal is 3-4 times what some of us need to do for good blood sugar control.

Follow the dietician's recommendations for a couple of days & then compare your blood sugar results with what they were on the doctor's dietary recommendations & then make a decision about who was right.

It is possible that you were eating too little with the doc's low-carb reccommendation. If you find your blood sugar was better under his recommendations, I'd still choose that way of eating, but eat more protein. Don't leave yourself hungry, just choose snacks that fill you up & add to the protein. Your body will let you know when it's had enough. - for instance, you could probably easily eat a stack of pancakes & maybe have seconds, right? But if someone put an equal-size stack of pork chops or steaks in front of you, you'd look at them like they were nuts for expecting you to eat that much, right?

Thank you for your replies. I don't eat a lot of bananas or carrots to start with. I may only have 1 or 2 bananas a week, sometimes not even that. My dietician is young and she is part of the diabetes education program that I took. We worked out a meal plan and I'll see her again in about 6 weeks.

I'm going to give it a try and keep track how my sugars are. She is already impressed at how well my sugars are now. She was giving me a starting point basically for how many carbs. My endocrin doctor didn't even give me a number on how many I can eat. Endocrin doctor wants me on a 1200 calorie diet and my dietician and I came up with a plan that came to 1250 calories roughly.
