View Full Version : Very scared. How quickly can LADA come on

I'm very scared right now. I posted in the Pre-diabetes forums, but just today I've had a sudden spike in my BG readings.
This morning my fasting was 113, but I think I messed it up because the blood has smeared. I took it again and it read 85. Then in a couple of minutes was at 99.
I took it again 1 hour after having one piece of sprouted grain bread with an egg. It was 146. It's never gone this high and I have had this same meal, but with 2 pieces of bread and it was only 108.
I just had lunch and took it one hour after and it was 164. It was brown rice, with ground turkey and vegetables in a stir fry sauce. The last time I had this same meal, it was 101 at one hour.
What could be going on? I did the 164 reading twice because I couldn't believe it. Could my meter be screwed up. This is the first day I've ever had such high numbers that I know of. I'm going through peri-menopause, and have had a rough few days with butterflies (adrenalin) constantly in my stomach. Could that be it? Should I be concerned? I'm shaking, I'm so scared.
Here's what I posted in the PD forum for reference of what my numbers have been like over the last few years

Brown rice ... may be brown but it is still carbs! I cannot eat 1/3 c without spiking all to h3ll!
Give your pancreas a rest and test some more tomorrow ... I know that panicky feeling, it is no fun and it does no good, either!

Stress always raises my BS, also I have found that stir fry sauce sometimes has a lot of sugar. Easy for me to say, but try to relax & try again tomorrow, in the grand scheme of things 1 or 2 days with readings of 160 is nothing

Many of us never even stopped off in the pre-diabetes vestibule but went straight to diabetes. My fasting blood sugar when I was mis-diagnosed as Type 2 was 325. Yes, your numbers may be changing or, as you say, it may be a fluke because of physical or mental stressors. Only time will tell. But don't panic. You are way ahead of the game because it sounds like you already have some knowledge of how to manage your diabetes. Linda is right about the rice, though. I'm also confused because you say "the stir fry sauce sometimes has a lot of sugar." Did you make it yourself or was it something from a jar? If it was a jar you might want to check the label. Yes, pre-made sauces like that often have sugar. You want to make your own sauce with natural things like soy, vinegar, sesame oil, etc.
If you continue to have higher numbers it might be time to tighten up your diet and/or see your doctor about starting meds. Hang in there.
I had a lot of times like that before I gave up on the glycemic index, basically. I still have to try a few of my favorites, in very small portions, now and again. Usually I note in my log, "Yep -- still diabetic!"
And yes, you are still Pre-D -- whereas I presented with DKA for my diagnosis.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it was a jarred sauce. The last time I had the same meal with a different sauce my numbers were fine afterwards. Perhaps this one had more sugar. It was also a different rice than last time now that I think about it. It was more of a mixed grain/wild rice thing. This time it was basmati. I've been eating basmati rice frequently though, and it's never done this to me before. That's what scares me.
Actually, one of the reasons I'm so confused, is that I'm not even considered PD here in Canada. If you look at the numbers I posted in the link in my OP, they're really quite normal.
That's why this spike has scared me so much. I've heard that LADA comes on suddenly, but I didn't think it was from one day to the next suddenly. Or can it?
Basmati is supposed to be pretty good for glycemic index. What portion size did you eat?
I think there are some food that just sometimes prove too much ... for me it's my black beans. Sometimes it is okay, other times terrible. My point is, it does not necessarily indicate a permanent change in your state. Sometimes subtle stuff like how active you have been recently or how much carb you have eaten in the last 24 hr affects response too ...

It was about 2/3 cup maximum. I do eat it on a regular basis and it's never ever made me spike like that.
The only other thing I did differently, was before the chinese stir fry meal, was I tried a PGX capsule for the first time (it's a fibre capsule that makes your food more viscous).
It's supposed to help level out glucose levels though. It also doesn't explain why with one piece of toast I went to high too. I hadn't taken the PGX this morning.
I hope it is just an anomaly. I'm going to the Dr. next week for my annual physical and I'm going to request an A1c. But like I said, he doesn't even consider me to be PD, let alone type II or LADA.

Could they change virtually overnight though. Because last week everything was as usual.
I'm having my period right now too. I've never noticed it making the numbers go up like this before though. Peri-meno is really doing a number on my hormones though.

Remember that Diabetes is consistently inconsistent. Even a slight difference in preparation can cause changes.
