Anyone have any bad eating habits that they can't break?

For me it's eating FAST! Having served in the military and then working for years as a fire fighter / EMT, I have been trained to eat fast (get it while you can) or don't eat at all. I'll sit down and my plate will be gone in a few minutes. My wife has to tell me to slow down LOL!

There will be times when I'm hungry before dinner and when I'm served, I'm done before anyone has their bread buttered or their napkin folded across their lap.

*Sigh* :o

Eating too quick was one of my bad habits, cut I learned to put my fork or spoon down after each bite. It took awhile, but now I eat much more slowly.

Guilty. For many years, I worked a job where we had 30 minutes to eat. Now, 30 years later, I still have to work on not wolfing food down.

Here's an idea that really helped me and you should do well with it because of your military background/discipline.

There is a new rule...YOU MUST PUT DOWN YOUR FORK BETWEEN EACH BITE

Guarenteed to slow you down and give yourself time to "feel" full.

hope this helps.

I have the opposite problem -- I eat way too slow. It's actually pretty typical of me to be still eating my food while my in laws are chafing for dessert. They've learned not to wait for me :)

I'm also OCD about my food. My husband had no idea, for years, why I liked one-dish meals like chili or salad. If I'm fed a main dish and a side dish, I have to eat all of one before I can eat any of the other. And they can't touch. If they touch, I have to separate them, and if one GETS on the other, I have to force myself to eat that part. My husband laughs at me now, but that's ok :)

LOL, I have the same problem *partially* for the same reason (being a former EMT) but also because I'm a mom & I liked eating while the food was still hot - so I'd wolf the food down before the kids started asking for more food...more drink...a chance to go potty...ketchup/ranch dressing (no matter what they were eating! LOL)

My mom (who was also diabetic & ate fast) was told to chew each bite 100 times!!!! (I've tried this...not easy!)

I'm going to have to try the "putting down the fork" idea. I eat really quickly, but don't have a clue as to why. I'm never in a rush (other than in my head :T) and I was an only child for most of my life..

Eating too fast is a bad habit I picked up in high school. In those (olden) days everybody ate in the cafeteria, and the sooner you finished eating, the quicker you could get downtown to hang out. As a child it took me for-freakin'-ever to eat a meal.

I think I need to practice laying down the fork between bites too . . . dunno if I have the self-discipline or not. :( :( :(
