Hi,

I just joined and have really been encouraged by the posts and replies I have read. I'm going through another change in regimen and am feeling a little alone in the world, know what I mean? Short history: I was diagnosed as a "borderline diabetic" when I was just nine years old. My fasting bs were normal, but glucose tolerance tests showed bs rise to 300's. In 1975, they had no clue what to do with me, I wasn't "normal" so they just put me on a diabetic diet and tested my fastings regularly. Fast-forward twenty-five years: My fastings were between 110-118, but I had health problems associated with long-term untreated diabetes. They called me Type 2 and started treatment with oral meds. I didn't fit the Type 2 profile - 30 something, underweight. They now say I have MODY, a genetic form. I've been taking the maximum dose of metformin for four years, also take amaryl and now inject byetta. They're trying to back me off the metformin. I feel like ****. It takes so long for my body to adjust to changes in meds. Any suggestions for coping?

Not really, but I was thinking you were probably MODY.

Welcome to the forums!

Have you read Jenny Ruhl's Website, Blood Sugar 101? She also has MODY.

Thanks for the welcome! I haven't heard of Jenny's website. I'll have to look it up.

She is not an MD, but she has a lot of information. Her site convinced me to pursue a LADA diagnosis, along with a lot of support and help from here.

One caution -- she does not think much of ANY oral meds. And I do not think they are quite THAT bad, personally ...

Welcome to the forum, Content2B!

Over the years, have you had a C-Peptide and GAD test done? This would determine how much insulin your pancreas is producing. If you're feeling like ****, it may be time to talk to your doctor about adding insulin.

Hey there Content2B... another MODY here... I hear you on the medication roller coaster... MODY is not something that MD's usually think of. They either group you into Type 2 or Type 1. And if you arent' Type 1, then you must be Type 2 even if you don't fit. I took Metformin for 2 years and it made me feel like **** and led to un-needed weight loss. Now I take Starlix and Amaryl and while I don't feel sick anymore, I have gained about 5 pounds and sometimes have too much circulating insulin and deal with Hypos... Hang in there...
