View Full Version : High BG and Exercise

I did a stupid thing this morning and am looking for some insight. I've heard that you shouldn't work out when you're bg is over 250. I woke up at 274 this morning (for no apparent reason) and decided that I didn't need one more excuse to skip my jog/walking routine that I started earlier this week. Well, since this morning my bg has been going higher and higher despite eating eggs for breakfast and an omelet (cheese and sausage) for lunch. My bg is at 386 right now. I've bolused several times and am drinking water to keep myself hydrated. It's just not coming down. Is this what typically happens when you exercise with a bg over 250? Any insight is appreciated!

You may want to give your doc a call. Not sure if that's why they say don't exercise but it doesn't hurt to check w/the doc.

Have you thought maybe it could be a bent canula or other problem with the pod? When that happens to me I will usually try a bolus with a syringe and if that works I will change my infusion site.

I agree with the above. Sounds like something else is the culprit. I have exercised with a high, 250 or so BS and it will usually come down with a bolus. Never had it keep climbing like you are saying.

Thanks for your replies. I did think about the pod and changed it before going to lunch. I gave myself a bolus with a syringe after lunch, and that's when it finally started coming down. Things are back to normal now - 88 - so that's good. What a day.

When this happens, do you bolus before the exercise? After? Both? Just curious because I can see myself in this situation again, and I don't feel justified in skipping my exercise just because my bg is too high.

I will bolus before exercise. Usually about 1/2 correction factor seems to work pretty good.

The reason they say you should avoid exercise at this level is because you risk going into ketoacidosis.

I bolus before, but maybe a third normal dosage and then I watch my bg closely during the workout and I don't plan on having quite as intense of a workout as I might normally (because I might drop low). I'll then bolus again after exercise depending on the meter reading at that point.
