My last fasting blood glucose over a year ago was 106 when I was 28. My dr. says 106 is in the normal range and isn't corcerned. Is he behind the times?, everything I found said 100-125 is pre-diabetic and I have two parents with type 2 diabetes.

Yes. Your doctor is behind the times. Based on everything I've read in the past year and a half, you should be taking corrective action now. What was your A1c?

my fasting, (that no one ever told me about) went 100, 3 months later, 108 (still no one told me)

to diabetic with an AC of 10.5 within a year..

I don't tell you this to panic you, but your dr is wrong. and you have a great opportunity for prevention and control if you are prediabetic.

It depends on the reference range of the lab in regards to what is normal and not normal, so you have to always refer to that report.

However, glucose is pretty much standardized all over the world with everyone probably calling a fasting glucose as normal when it's 70-100. Most doctors won't care if a result is slightly over the normal range. In this particular case, I wouldn't worry if I were you, but I'd certainly take action.

Personally, I think doctors all have to get on the same page and start emphasizing action to be taken once the result is above 100. Period. Still a ton of healthy beta cells remaining, alot can be done. I think it's absolutely imperative to restore the health of your beta cells (pancreatic cells that produce insulin) while you still can. Some studies show that they start dropping off far before a glucose of 128, or whatever the number is that they finally get around to labelling you as a diabetic.

Thanks for the reply's. Something else strange I forgot to mention. About a year ago I got a blood glucose test done for life insurance. I hadn't eaten for about 3 to 4 hours and my blood glucose was 64. It wasn't a fasting test just whenever I guess. I told this to my dr. and he didn't seemed concerned. Is that too low?

If both parents have it, then you might get it as well. I am told it skips a generation,,,,but in my family it skipped 2. :o) However, if both parents have it you should be concerned but not over a 106am reading. You can start to diet and exercise now to avoid the onset later.

I had always heard that it skips a generation as well...but in my family my grandfather and grandmother on mom's side had it, mom had it and now I have it.

LOL if I had fasting readings of 100 to 140 I would feel good. My fasting readings are between 200-300 without insulin and sometimes with. Please do some research. Here is some info for you.
Signs and tests
Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed with the following blood tests:

Fasting blood glucose level -- diabetes is diagnosed if higher than 126 mg/dL on 2 occasions.
Oral glucose tolerance test -- diabetes is diagnosed if glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 hours.
Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level -- diabetes is suspected if higher than 200 mg/dL and accompanied by the classic symptoms of increased thirst, urination, and fatigue ...

Yeah I don't think there is a clear cut way to determine if we are going to get the disease or not. As a matter of fact I find a lot of different opinions on how to care for diabetes and how it effects people. My great-grandmother died from it, my 2nd cousin diet from it, one whole side of my family has it.......It is all a mystery.

I started with the same FBG reading and was told I was "pre." Take a fasting blood glucose test where you drink glucose and then test at 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. If your parents are diabetic you have heck of a huge chance of being diabetic. Use their meters and do the test yourself - in the morning before eating drink a super large Coke from McDonalds. (not the canned stuff - you want the high sugar from the soda fountain!) and test yourself as above. 145 is the max a non-diabetic EVER goes, no matter what they eat or how much. I would bet the farm you go way over that at some point during the test.

THe fact of the matter is there is no such thing as "pre" and docs do us no favors by saying that. The truth is we are, at the very least, at the early stages of the disease. It will not go away or be "cured." It can be controlled through diet, exercise or meds, but it will not go away to where we can again eat anything we want in any amount.

Your doc is probably a GP, like mine was. Sent me home with "eat less sugar and carbs." I only found my numbers has raised 2 years later by accident, and thank God I did so I could start managing the disease before there was damage.

Take the fasting blood glucose test, or ask your doc to administer it. Use your parent's meters to test after a high carb meal - and test 45 minutes and 1 hour after your first bite. Docs like to see where we are at 2 hours (shows if it is coming down) but if you peak over 145 you are starting to do damage to your beta cells. That's why most of us test to find our peak and then manage to those numbers.

Good luck and take care!

Just tested a relative with BS spiking to 163 (9.1 mmol) 1 hour after a 288ml suger rich drink and a strawberry smoothie.
Do you think I have to be worried for her now?

Gayle,
I have done that before I was 158 one hour post and 155 after two hours. Not that big of a drink, but a non-diet one.
