View Full Version : Physiology question ...
Okay ... we know that blood sugar can go up during strenuous exercise, right?
But ... does it go up in healthy individuals, too? Or would a large rise post-exercise be an indication of IGT?

I would venture a "No"... normal people maintain their BG level in the normal range at all times -- homeostasis ;)
Although the liver and muscles may give up Glycogen as Glucose to be utilised during the activity... at the self-same time, insulin will be secreted as needed to make use of that Glucose energy.
That'd be my guess anyhoo  ...and yes I'm sure I've oversimplified the physiology but the overall effect is doubtless as I have described.

Mine, too (great minds, Frank!) ... hoping to get a consensus for my Dear Husband ... who is in denial a bit still.

Nope, normal people have working pancreases. If you put me side by side with a doppleganger of me except for him having a working pancreas, at the end of a 5K race, his blood sugar will have hardly moved from the start whereas mine if I haven't tweaked any insulin injections to help, I can be anywhere from 50 to 150 mg/dL higher, although the quality of my data isn't all that exact and the variables aren't well controlled there.

Did you mean the blood sugar decreases? Thats what I thought that the insulin kicks in and decreases the bg,thus an individual could have a low blood sugar. Is this correct? am I missing something. Because when I do something strenuous or excercise my bgs are low.

Some people, including my husband, get an increase from strneuous exercise. Sometimes ... not always.
