I've learned so much reading everyone's posts. Good pointers and great information.

Here's my history. In May I did my normal blood work. My A1C came back with an average glucose of 237 and a 9.9. All of my prior annual readings were between 5.6 and 6.1 (about 10 years).

My doctor was really surprised and said I was diabetic and started me on 250 mg's of metformin twice a day. He had me do a liver function test before the metformin. My doctor didn't say if I was type 1 or 2?

What changed? I was really stupid for about four months before my latest A1C. I busted up my ankle and knee and couldn't get around. I was bored and just sat around feeling sorry for myself. I ate 2 or 3 twinkies a day, cookies, candy, chips, fast food, mexican food, chinese food, etc. Really Really stupid.....

Prior to the injury I was active, playing golf two or three times a week.

Now. I walk 4 to 5 miles a day everyday, back to playing golf twice a week, no sweets, and try to watch what I eat. I've lost 24 lbs off my 213 in May. My numbers have dropped and rarely do I see a number after meals of over 140....most of the time its under 120 after meals.

I'm 61 years old, been retired for 3 plus years.

So that's my history. I assume I'm type 2? I'll ask my doctor on my next visit. BTW, can't wait for my next A1C.

I would think your type 2 if the doctor put you on meformin only and with those BS numbers that low your probly doing good. If you were typ1 you would be on insulin

Wow. We have a lot in common. I am 61 and had A1C for years at 5.8 and 5.9. I have no idea how bad and how dreaded the 6.0 A1c was. Now with a 6.1 my new doctor says I am type 11 and have probably been so for years. Having lost 30-40 pounds every other year and then gaining those back the following year . . . you know the drill. I am also walking and have lowered by levels and lost 20 pounds I am now at 215 lbs. and hope to get to 175. I think you are type 11 but the doc should tell you. I read and read. There are several great books out there. Wished I had read and educated myself five years ago! Be in touch; we have similar stories and goals. PS I do not like my fasting level, but have most readings are now under 140 . . . but if I eat some fruits it jumps to 250! Comes down in an hour or two but all I read says that with any reading that high it is a definite that I am and will always be diabetic and can control but not reverse.

Yes, that would be type 2. Sounds as if you are doing the right things for yourself. Very good.

I am of the nature that type 2 should be changed to Stage 1, 2 and 3 Type 2 diabetes. Its possible that you've been in stage 1 for a while and the no activity and junk food eating (been there done that) kicked it into high gear. congrats on getting #'s down

i know for myself that if i lost weight i would have better #'s too, but i lack motivation and its hard eating a high protein diet when you are poor. I am single so I don't like buying some foods in bulk

I think that as a type 2 you can but it in remission, kinda like cancer, you always will be a cancer pt, but sometimes you won't be having symptons, or be sick or need cancer treatment, same like type 2, sometimes some people can be in remission, they ahve that great of control.

I also assume your diagnosis was "type 2", but sometimes it's not that simple or clear cut. As someone >50 years old, a "type 1" diagnosis would often really be a "type 1.5" or LADA, which can progress to classic insulin dependence at a variety of rates. I was recently rediagnosed to "LADA" after 11 years diagnosed as a "type 2" and, even though that reflects some level of auto-immune based impairment of insulin supply, I'm still on only metformin, exercise and diet. The "diet" part not to lose weight in my case (I'm quite slim), but rather to avoid large spikes in BS levels.

Many Type 2's are also on insulin.

Now that you're back to exercising and have lost some weight, you may try taking just 1 pill a day and see what happens. If your numbers start going back up, go back to 2 pills.

Test in the morning before breakfast then 2 hours after each meal and see what your numbers are doing.

A fasting blood sugar of less than 100 is good for a diabetic. Your Dr may feel like you can manage your blood sugar (keep it from being too high) with just diet and exercise. Some Type 2's are able to accomplish this. Others require medications. Test and see what your blood sugar reading is 2 hours after each meal. It should be less than 140 (my Dr actually likes to see it less than 120).
