okay I bought a monitor, walgreens brand. Test my blood glucose, it was 89 at 10:00am. I ate raisan bran at 6:30am and had a glass of pepsi about an hour ago. What now? Should i eat something and do it in an hour or what?

Next time, check your blood sugar right before, then 2 hrs after your first bite of the raisin brand (or you could do a 1 hr, 2 hr and 3 hr if you're inclined to see the rise and fall), or whatever food you eat and see what the readings are.

A random reading is fine, but in and of itself, doesn't tell you as much as a fasting or pre and post meal. 89 is a good reading, no point in you eating something and testing if it's not your lunch time.

That depends.
I will usally eat somthing at lunch time as I woudn't want my BG to drop below 80.
I have a question was that diet pepsi.

Okay I am not diabetic, not sure if that matters. I have some pop tarts, it's 10:15 now. If I eat those and test in a hour would that be a good idea?

If you're not diabetic, i'm curious as to why you'd bother testing after each meal? If you have a family history, just get an A1C at your annual physical exam, as that should show problems should they creep up on you.

My blood glucose was 89 just a few minutes ago. I am eating pop tarts and drinking a 8oz pepsi, not diet. How often should I test after I eat?

Kosmo...if you are concerned about your blood sugar and diabetes, I would change your diet. Eliminate the Pepsi, poptarts, raisin bran and all the other starchy carbs you may be eating. Replace them with fresh vegetables, lower GI fruits, and lower carb versions of things like bread. Enjoy nuts and seeds, and whole grains. Add a healthy proportion of protein and replace any saturated fat in your diet with mono-and-polyunsaturated fats.

I'm not clear on why you are testing if you are not diabetic (haven't read your earlier posts), but if you must test do it before you eat, then at 1 and 2 hours after you start a meal. If you are truly curious, also test at 3 and 4 hours to see how your body processes carbs. If you're really compulsive and have lots of spare change, it's interesting to test at 20 minute intervals for about an hour and a half after you eat....this catches the BG progression like nothing else.

do this, test 1 hours after first bite and test 2 hours after first bite, then come back and tell us.

Yeah I know I need to cut out that food! That's part of my problem. I am pre-diabetic by my fasting but my dr. has never done any other tests for almost two years now, and both of my parents are type 2. I am just interested in the results.

As hard as this is to hear, all your testing means nothing if you aren't willing to make the dietary changes that will make it easier for your little pancreas to continue working. It's that simple. Successfully managing diabetes requires self discipline and the willingness to make the necessary adjustments.

I agree JenB, I have alot of work to do!! Even if this is fine, doesn't mean I can continue to eat like this....

You're off to a good start, Kosmo. When (not "if") your pre-D begins to slide, you'll be a little ahead of the game. Good work.
