Hello Guys I just wanted to ask to see if this was normal or what is goin on with me.. I have been going to the gym for 4 weeks stright I do 1 hour of Clycling 3 times a week then 1 hour of KickBoxing Cardio and I sweat like a pig during class and my clothes do fit a little more loose, but when I step on the scale the numbers do not come down. I do notice my face is thinner and so are my arms. I do notice my belly in the morning is nice and flat and then there are days that its looks like a beer gut. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I do not drink Milk I only eat 2 eggs in the morning that is it. I eat a handful of Peanuts for Snacks and also I eat more Salad than anything else for lunch. I am on Metformin 2 times a day 1000MG and Glyburide 2 times a day 10g in the morning and 5g in the evening. I do notice that at night like around 3 AM I wake up in a pool of sweat at night and yesterday I almost pass out in the GYM check the sugar at it was at 64...So can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong??
thanks
John

I am going to ask you a maybe depressing question or 2.
what the total carb intake per day?
whats the total calorie (this sounds like the big one) intake per day?
are you overweight?
one more.. do you need the glyperide? I do not think you do, but I am not sure of course
how often are you going low buddy? sounds like often.
you may be able to reduce your meds - i dunno, but that would be cool.

Yes I am overweight I weight 192 pound and my height is 5'4 I need to weight is 140...My carbs intake I have been following your advice from last time. No bread, no Whole Milk not even Skim Milk, Everything baked not fried. More Salad than anything else in my whole day. Peanuts according to the can 1/4 cup is only 7g of carbs so that will be like 14g of carbs for Snacks together. my last meal is before the Gym at 4:30 PM. after Gym Protein Shake which I believe is 300 Calories. or a small apple to avoid recent sugar drops at night. I can tell you even tho I am 192 I look fine and Sexy!!! LOL... I am bulky looking I used to do weigth lifting now I want to look thin with defenition and my six packs back...
You may be gaining muscle and thus offsetting the lost of fat mass, with muscle mass.
Keep it up -- eventually you will start losing fat to overtake the muscel gains!

Yeah someone at the GYm told me that..But you know I want to hear from my favorite forum because we all know our conditions and who knows more than us that we live with it daily.
Also my last question for advice... Its it ok to do an RMR test at the GYM??? The trainer was telling me that when I do it it will determine at what heart rate level am I really burning fat and at what heart rate level am I gaining muscle and supposely it will help me burn the fat that I want and see the number drop. What do you guys think about that?
Thanks
John
By the way the test is $230.00....
Thanks

your funny.
I have a wieght problem, and I have to be really calorie restricted to lose and maintain.
most days I am under 1000 calories a day, and less than 50 carbs per day.
depressing? nah, I am good. My new motto is "food is fuel" the only time I think of fod otherwise is on Friday night when i go out with DGF. I still eat low carb, but I might eat more stuff.
because - well, something about going out with DGF. Something about that makes me want wine and food. I will have to analyze that, anyway, yeap thats it.
but I excersize less than you. I walk 3 miles 4 times a week.
boring...
so mmmm?????
about the going low. you are still going low alot.
I am wondering why you are still taking so much glyperide? I know he reduced it, but not by alot.
just wondering. less meds is far better if you don't need them.
I am not sure why you are not loosing the wieght.
whn I lost my most weight - I was a bit over the top. I was less than 800 calories a day and less than 20 carbs a day.
I had lost my frigging mind. I would be starving and force down a bowl of plain fresh spinach. It was nutty. I suppose I lost 40-50 lbs in 3-4 months. I wasn't wieghing myself much. it was all about getting blood sugar under control after dx.
I was very focused on my meter, and just happened to loose a ton of wieght.
so I added a few carbs and calories. cuz actually I was fasting so much the liver dumping was killing my numbers and ya know my hair was falling out, and people would see me and gasp. not like "oh my are you loosing wieght?" but like "gasp, OMG what is wrong with you?"
but both my doctors told me I was fine.
go figure.

No idea other than the money why it would not be okay ... are you on any sulfonyl ureas, that might make you go low?

Use a food journal and keep track of your calories. Sometimes we eat more calories than we think, and lows will cause you to eat more calories than you want. You should also get out the tape measure. Sometimes the scale doesn't show weight loss but the tape measure shows you're shrinking. Muscle weighs more than fat and if you're really building muscle it might be that you are losing fat, just gaining a lot of muscle. If you really are not losing weight, are not losing inches and have checked your calorie intake to make sure that you're not eating more than you realize, you should make an appointment with your doctor. There could be some other issue going on, like your thyroid.

I ride with a heart rate monitor most of the times I am out. I can moniter it constantly since I put the watch part on my handle bars. This is a good tool to see if you are burning fat or muscle. I try and maintain 80 to 85% for 1 to 2 hours on the bike. Hills make it go higher. :D. At the end of the ride it does the calculations to see what my average was and what my high was and how many calories I burned. I don't beleive the calorie part but it makes me feel good. I'm pretty lean at 5'7" and 145 so your heart rate will vary from mine. My monitor was a little over 100 dollars.
As for the weight yes muscle does weigh more than fat so you may be gaining some muscle tissue.

I really really want to loose the weight. I want to see how I would look at my ideal weight and see how many heads I can make turn again!!! LOL... Just messing with you guys.. I am happily married...

Ok.. yes I do have the heart Monitor I bought the RS300X from Polar and that is why the trainer told me to take the RMR test so they can show me what my 5 heart rates stages could be depending on what I want so I can really see the results...

Hi John,
Please review the following ARTICLE (http://www.mens-total-fitness.com/muscle-gain.html) regarding muscle gain.
The most interesting part is:
The "average" male, if there is such a thing, with a year or two of training behind them can expect to gain roughly 2-4% of their initial weight after six weeks of regular resistance exercise.
I think you're still eating too many calories. As mentioned before, keep track by writing them down.
Listed below is a very good formula for calculating your daily caloric needs. I have used the formula for a while and seems to be working. You can read more about weight loss & questions HERE. (http://weightloss.about.com/od/eatsmart/a/blcalintake.htm)
Women:
655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)
I am 5'10" and was 214lb at my heaviest 5 years ago. I have lost 20lbs since diagnosed, in 4 months. I am currently at 182, and hope to lose 5 more lbs in August, and will start a program (p90x) for extreme fitness in September.

Right on Bro....
I did P90x for the whole 3 months and I looked like a monster I was ripped and bulky..but well there is that maintenance phase afterwards that I could not keep up with so now I am leaning towards lean and cut now....plus I am 5"4 so bulky made me look even fatter...when I did P90X I started at 190 pounds and finished at 210 pounds...It was a great work out specially plyometrics its the mother of all work outs yuo will be in pain!!! Good luck with that...

Glyburide is a sulfonylurea class drug and can cause lows. You might not need it with the lifestyle changes you've made.

Hello ButterfliesKisses,
I just talk to my doctor and he stated that 80 - 60 is still not a sign to take me of completely off the glyburide, but he did got rid of one more pill. So now my new prescription is 2 metformins in the day and 2 glyburides oppose to 2 metformins and 3 glyburides 2 in the morning and one at night.. He is really proud of me...Thanks everyone again for all of your support... God Bless...

Is RMR similar to the heart rate calculations using your age and weight? Just curious. My gym doesn't offer testing so I just calculated my max heart rate using livestrong.com and put that in my polar monitor. I can definitely tell when I'm near my max as it feels like my chest is pounding. Regarding the lows, I do have to have some carbs before I do cardio or I will drop and it is not a fun feeling to get woozy on a cardio machine. Good Luck.

My first 4 months were not very effective. Only lost a couple lbs. I work out 30 minutes EVERY day including weekends. Otherwise I would gain back on the weekend what I worked off during the week. I add onto the official 30 minutes of a Health Rider with walking by parking further away and taking steps even if it hurts until I can now do 9 flights at once! I also have this new concept at work called "walking meetings" where a 1 on 1 meeting is held by walking around the campus for 30-60 minutes! It is a great idea. :)
If you said you have thinner face and rams, the weight is moving. I had that happen a couple of times. I would not loose weight, but I could tell some part had less fat and was getting firmer. I can't explain why it happens. I just say that my body is readjusting itself. ;)
Don't give up. It may take a while for the whole thing to kick in, but it will and then it will keep working for a while.
Food is also very important! Dessert kills me! Don't deny yourself anything, but make it 2 bites instead of a whole piece. Unless you can't resist, then you have to deny it. Sorry! For me it was years of nuns telling me to eat everything on my plate because children in china are starving. I still hear those voices in my head! I have to fight it and leave food behind.
As I get further down the road, I have had to kick things up every month or so. I have added weight to my Health Rider to keep the work out enough to make me sweat every time. I found that after a month, my body would get used to the work out and it didn't do as much. Just keep that in mind.
Exercise until you can't sing, but you can still carry on a conversation. That is the right level of exercise.
Oh yeah, many years ago, I went to a Gym. It did not work for me because there was a McD's across the street that I could not get past after making my body very hungry. That was not a good idea.
Good luck, and keep trying. Don't give up!

Hello guys I am sorry it was my day off from work so I could not reply to your question before.. Yes the RMR test is measures the amount of calories your body needs just to function and also they tell you how much you burn while you rest. They put this mask on you and they monitor your whole heart rate and movement with a computer which tell you the threshold and the amount of calories you need to eat to loose weight. I thought it was very informative so I believe the $200 was excellent spenture... According to the program they gave me if I maintain my heart rate at 160BPM they I and calories no more that 2,200 a day I can end up loosing 1 pound per week, but then again if I fell off the wagon then I can only loose say maybe .5 pounds....

Trouble is that your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) changes, so for your $200 you found out how many calories you burnt on that day ;) If you now try to lose weight by restricting to fewer calories it is very likely that your body will compensate by reducing your RMR to compensate.
There was an interesting BBC Horizon Documentary a short while back, called "Why Are Thin People Not Fat?"... in it they repeated an experiment that took place in a Vermont prison in the 1960's. In the prison study they wanted to study the changes that humans undergo as they gain excess fat mass. They enlisted volunteers to overeat on the promise of early release if they could gain an extra 25% excess fat mass -- what surprised them was that more than a few of them failed to gain the required weight even after increasing their calories to over 10,000 per day! As in the Horizon study, it seems that the RMR increases as the body works hard to maintain a steady state... fidgeting also increase as does the production of body heat... all attempts to to burn off the excess calories. We also have access to foods such as fruit all year round where -- at least for my ancestors - fruit was only around in the Fall... just in time to pack on a few extra pounds of Fat before the long cold Winter... this is one major change that I have noted just in my own lifetime.
My simplistic understanding is that the body has two energy modes:
* Fat Storage Mode when there is plenty of dietary Carbohydrate/sugar available -- and correspondingly high levels of insulin which is not only responsible for storing that energy as Fat but also locks away Fat preventing the body from burning it for energy.
* Fat Burning Mode when the carbohydrate and corresponding insulin levels are low enough that the body starts using its stored Fat for energy. THIS IS NORMAL and is supposed to happen between meals, overnight etc... the trouble is that nowadays the gap between meals has become smaller and smaller, and the diet that has been promoted as healthy is rich in refined/concentrated carbohydrates which keep the insulin levels high and keeps us in Fat Storage Mode.
The upshot of all this neatly explains to me our scary rates of obesity, Type 2 D... AND why it is so hard to drag your a$$ to the gym when everyone is nagging you to do so... you body is stuck in Fat Storage Mode so it is doing everything it can to conserve energy!
Switch modes and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much more willing your body is to find way to burn off that excess Fat :)
One last point is that by focusing on restricting calories you are restricting ALL food/nutrient groups and are likely to lose weight but that weight may be made up of both excess fat AND lean muscle. I'd rather just lose the excess fat.
