Okay, I will have been back on metformin for a week tomorrow. The worst side effect I have had is the headaches, which I'm not convinced are entirely from the metformin (and actually weren't as bad today as the past couple of days). My doctor had recommended taking 500 mg for two weeks and then going to 1000, saying it may take me that long to adjust to it. But I feel fine now... I have tried to call her about seeing if I can go ahead and increase it, but her office has yet to call me back about that and upping my test strips.

Another factor is that next week is my last week off for the summer before preplanning, which starts on the 10th. So if the increase might afftect me, I'd rather it be next week when I can be home to deal with it than while I'm trying to get my room and plans ready for 180 high school students.

Thoughts?

I just answered my own question, via speaking with my pharmacist, and I thought I'd share the answer in case others are thinking the same thing...

He said that my body could go into shock if I up my metformin too quickly, so I should absolutely not increase it early.

You're on metformin 500 mg per day or 500 mg twice daily?

I was started initially (day one) on metformin 500 mg twice daily (and still take the same dose). I've had friends who were started on metformin 1000 mg twice daily.

It can also take a few weeks to get the full benefit of your metformin dose.

I think you need to give the new diet and the met some time.

realize that you ultimately want to take as few meds as you can.

it took the met and the new diet and my body a few weeks.

I could see the numbers going down but only in a general way.

Right now I'm taking 500 mg once a day.

Okay... it makes me feel better that it took your bodies a few weeks to normalize. Right now my fasting glucose is about 170, and the pharmacist looked at me like I was crazy when I told him I was concerned that my numbers weren't lining up. Fasting glucose on this past Saturday morning, which was my first morning with my meter, was 208. Sunday was something like 220. From Monday to today, it's been between 170 and 185, with today's 171 being the lowest. So I guess it's going in the right direction...
