I know, I'm a little thread happy lately. I'll slow down after this one, I promise.
Just a question for the parents...
How do you feed your kids in light of your diabetes?
Are you overly cautious with the carbs that they intake or do you give them things you can't or shouldn't have and live vicariously?
I do a little of both.
Just curious.
Oh, good one!
Okay I can answer this, but it'll be a bit different ... my kids are adopted. BUT they are international adoptees, which automatically puts them more at risk for D, oddly, and all 3 are of ethnicities which ALSO put them at risk. and one underwent an unusually dramatic growth spurt, which further increases risk.
They are also ovo-lacto vegetarian.
They eat a LOT of starch and sugar. And I AM indeed trying to cut back on it. They only drink diet sodas, they do drink a lot of milk. And one has an eating disorder so I get whatever calories I can into her ... she is only now learning to eat vegetables at 8. I WISH I could get them to eat better ... but unfortunately anything green or not sweet is evidence of my attempt to POISON them!
My kids are grown and moved out, but when they come to visit I cook what they like and I try to make something that is similar but a little more BG friendly. My son who is Hypo I have warned him about the possibility of it turning into Hyper later in life. Fortunately he doesn't like sweets and or starchy foods right now. By the way they just had a new baby, my third grandkid, Jackson is his name.

Before diagnosis, I occasionally would reign my son's strange diet in and make him eat healthy, but it usually didn't last because I didn't eat healthy. Since diagnosis, he has picked up some of my eating habits and has learned to read labels. He is drinking more water and is more health conscious. He also is being more adventurous regarding vegetables. He's only 11, but we, as a family (Hubby very reluctantly included) are trying to eat healthy in general, not just low carb.

I don't feed them differently because of D... I try to make healthier choices in general because I feel that many of today's kids eat an astounding amount of pseudo-food that is basically all processed junk... so I encourage fresh/raw foods as much as possible, I bake our own bread (yes, I grind the flour for it too), we get raw milk from a local dairy, and I try to limit anything from a "box" as much as possible.
We don't typically have juice in the house, ever.. but there is always plenty of fresh fruit.
That said, if we go out to eat, I'm not going to tell my kids they can't have juice or soda if they want to - I really think it's fine once in a while and that should be their choice, but at home they're happy to drink water a majority of the time.

My daughter is primarily a carbitarian. Sometimes she's a chipatarian (when we're at our friends' house). We limit sweets, treats, and such mostly because we don't have a lot in the house anyway. Fortunately she doesn't like soda (because it's "sizzly"). She goes through phases of liking meat but can pretty much take it or leave it. She'll eat veggies at school (monkey see, monkey do) but will rarely eat them at home even though I eat an enormous variety of them (so no monkey see, monkey do there). And she'll eat just about any fruit there is (doesn't like grapefruit or kiwi). They had a broccoli cheese and noodle casserole at school that she said she loved. I asked her if I made it at home would she eat it. Her answer: "No!" (like i was crazy).
We try to expose her to a healthy variety of foods, some she likes, some she doesn't. I was a horrible eater at her age, my husband the complete opposite.
