Its a method for which you adjust your eating (and for some exercise etc) regimen to your glucose.

As an example, I test when I wake up in the morning. My standard breakfast is 3 eggs and a slice of low carb toast, now if my morning reading is low I'll add a 4th egg, real low an extra slice of toast, if I'm running high in the morning I'll skip the toast.

Also: test after you eat to see what the meal has done to your BGs. As you discover what foods raise your BGs to a level higher than you like, you stop eating them--or limit how much of them you eat at a sitting.

How much should be normal to raise your blood sugars after you eat?

Ie...if you bs is 120 before you eat..what would be acceptable after you eat?

I try to keep my bg from going over 140, whatever, and believe me - I don't always succeed. But if I were already at 120, I'd have a strictly protein meal - something like a cheese omelet with bacon or sausage. Anything with next to no carbs.

Go to Blood Sugar 101, and click on the link for "How to Get Your Blood Sugar Under Control."

People vary on the targets they shoot for. Evidence is that prolonged periods of time above 140 mg/dL causes cell damage and leads to complications such as neuropathy, etc. The AACE recommends that your 2-hour post-prandial BG be no greater than 140; others try to keep their BGs under 140 at all times. I try to keep mine under 120 at all times.

If I were at 120 before a meal (and we weren't talking "before breakfast", which might involve the dawn phenomenon), I would consider not eating until my BG had dropped a mite. Alternatively, I would eat a meal with as few carbs as possible.

Heck...my docs would be thrilled if my bs was 120.... I hate to admit but mine spiked at 332 at dinner... I shopped and walked after dinner and when we got home...I took a long hard walk...the best I could do was get it down to 215. It is crazy!!! I will read..thank you for your help!

Psst, jtausch . . . I got a warning for posting a link to the site . . . Diabetes Forums does not permit linking to other sites that seek to sell things.
