My first day w/the bs monitor and my first day on here...
:o
I have a "addictive personality" and I'm a binge eater so I don't really keep food in the house (cause I'm single and childless) now I'm hungry and I don't cook (because then there would be food in the house ...and chances are i would eat it all.

I eat taco's alot... omgosh, I'm hungery. What can I go get to eat? I'm craving my moms porkchops but that isn't going to happen so then I think sunchips with cheese on them and ....ham I could put ham on them ... and ice cream OH I don'ttever go a day without ice cream. krap, what's a girl to do?

Calm down! :)

I promise this'll get easier. I have an addictive personality too; in fact, my sister has a heroin problem and alcoholism runs in my dad's family (and he had quite a time with it when he was younger). So I'm convinced that, since I don't seem to have a problem with drugs or alcohol but that I would be going absolutely mad if I had to give up certain foods forever, my addiction is to certain foods. Trust me, I know how you feel; lots of people here do.

The only thing I can tell you about what you can and can't eat is that we're all different. As others here will say, eat to your meter. This means that you should test before eating and then again 2 hours later. If the two numbers are more than 50 points apart (or higher than 140 if your premeal numbers are in the normal range) then you know that whatever you ate at that meal should probably be something to avoid.

I have found that I can have sunchips as long as I eat them in moderation, add some kind of protein to them (cheese and ham would be good options, but watch the ingredients on the ham, as some are loaded with sugar).

And tacos... guess what? Most stores sell low carb tortillas. They taste just as good as the regular soft shells, and will hardly touch most people's bg.

Give yourself a break, girl. Take a deep sigh, remind yourself that it will be okay, that you will find ways around the carbs that make you sick, and move forward. It's the only way it'll get easier.

*hugs*

Ice cream: spend $25 for a Hamilton Beach ice cream maker, and make your own ice cream with sugar-free syrups for flavoring, instead of sugar.

Just my opinion and maybe counterintuitive... but... eat the pork chops... just leave off the potatoes, bread and starchy gravy :)

Seriously... I find refined/concentrated Carbohydrates to be addicting and -- try as a might over 25 years -- I could never control my hunger cravings until I virtually eliminated them from my what I eat. Now I don't even miss them... my experience only of course... YMMV... and I wish you the best.

145high, I think you posted before, but, are you taking metformin?

If not, it is something that has really helped control my appetite. I recommend it ... as long as you can toelrate the GI side effects. My MD told me, if you get those, try to hang on, they often subside over time. I have much better impulse control now.

And if you cannot take met, another good med that helps people with addiction problems is Welbutrin. Something to discuss with your MD -- it is even used to help people stop smoking.

And, yes, eat the pork chops.

I know what you are going through. I have a huge appetite! I love eating mounds of pasta and fried rice and such. I am pretty new to this board and the ideas of dieting. I just started yesterday on a low carb diet. The thing is, for now, I can eat as much as I want to keep full. I just can't eat the pasta and fried rice. I can eat steak and pork chops and chicken. I would suggest to you that you try a salad with feta cheese and lots of dressing and then eat those pork chops! Eat a steak. Try roasted peppers. They will fill you up. Enjoy!

Keep food in the house, but make it food that you have to cook.

If your food is in the form of cold cuts, say, you can just grab it and eat it, which will feed into your impulse eating.

If your food is in the form of raw chicken breasts, say, you'll have to get out a pan, season the chicken, cook the chicken, etc. That should restrain some of the impulsive behavior. Don't cook more than you can eat at one time -- portion-control the amount by weighing it.

You can have ice cream, as long as it is portion-controlled. A quarter-cup of Breyer's mint chocolate chip is only about 9 carbs, if I recall correctly. Breyer's makes low-carb ice cream as well.

You need to make a distinction about what you feel compelled to do (and thus may be able to treat via medication that reduces compulsive and addictive behaviors), and what you simply tend to give into because it makes you feel good at the time. The latter you simply have to curb via self-discipline. Set yourself rules and don't vary from them.

You don't need to go hungry. You just need to change what you eat.

They do! I just got some last night, but haven't had any yet as my BG was 160 after dinner. :(

But, TONIGHT, I'm mixing some no sugar added peanut butter in with the low carb ice cream... mm. I can't wait. hehe.

YMMV, but Meats, cheeses, veggies, most fruits (in moderation), nuts, are all pretty "BG friendly" for most people. I miss my baked potatoes too. hehe. They certainly are NOT BG friendly for me. :(
