View Full Version : Is cheese a carb or a protine?

I was wondering what catagory cheese falls in. Whan I had gestational deabetes I was told it was a protein. And now that Im a T2 they say its a carb. I know its in the milk section, but dont understand why they said it was a protein then and now a carb. Can someone help me understand this? What is cheese for you? :confused:

Jeana,

As far as I know, cheese is a protein. I don't know why it would be a carb...even if it is considered dairy. Cheese has very little carbohydrates and no or little sugar in it. I don't think it impacts blood sugar the way carbohydrates do.

I've always thought it was a protein, too. That's the way I've always treated it.

Cheese has both carbohydrate and protein, but mostly protein. The higher the fat the less carbohydrate and the more protein it has. A slice of "full-fat" American cheese has about .6g carbohydrate and 6g of protein. A slice of "low-fat" american cheese has about 2g carbohydrate and 4g protein (and tastes like cardboard IMO). Reading the label should give you a good idea.

Thanks everyone for answering my question. I had to ask all of you here what you were told because I too thought cheese is a protein. I did not trust my dietrition when she told me it now a carb. I honestly dont beleive much of what she tells me. She does not seem to be very informed and smart. Im looking into getting a new dietrition. I hope I get one soon and he or she will know much more correct info. My dietrition also does not beleive in using the GI list. She says it is not important. From what I have learnd form the wonderful people here, is that the GI list really helps. I trust all you here sooooo much more than what my doctors teel me. All of us here are living with this diease and know what works and what doesn't. Thanks again for helping me find out that I was right and my doctor and dietrition was wrong. I know I can rely on the great people here to help me and support me. :)

I've been to 4 dietitians in 2 years and haven't been happy with any of them. Seems their "opinions" and what works for others are more important that what is good for their patients. I found out on my own about the GI (which is helpful for what little carb I can eat) and ditto on cutting waaaaaaaaay back on the carbs. It just shows that you're probably smarter than the average (dietitian).
