Hello.
I have realized that marijuana has no effects on my blood sugar, other than the occasional poor judgement when it comes to snacks. I am not coming here to be told not to, but I am seeking information. I am planning on taking LSD and psilocybin mushrooms in the near future to expand my mind and learn more about myself and the world I am living in. Will either of these drugs have any direct adverse effects on my blood sugar? I have seen mixed answers on other websites and thought I would go here hoping to find some first hand experiences. Thanks in advance!

Probably. Couldn't tell how though. Anything that may impair your ability to feel hypos, test your blood glucose, eat or inject insulin poses a potential health risk.
My advice for this would be the same as someone starting to drink for the first time with D - don't overdo it the first time, make sure you've all got all your stuff nearby, test regularly during the 'experience' and then use that information to better plan for the next time.

And have someone there with you who IS NOT impaired to watch you, take care of you if needed. Someone you trust with your life. Your mind set going into your experiment has a tremendous effect on your experience while in an altered state. DO NOT use hallucinogenic drugs if you are prone to the adverse emotions, as they can be magnified exponentially while impaired.
I'm not trying to be preachy, just trying to pass on knowledge I've gained from watching people, and being a drug and alcohol educator. Hope all your "trips" are good ones.

Hello Meddle:
Here's a few suggestions for expanding your mind (and spirit) and getting to know yourself better. By your post I'm guessing you're a type A, performance oriented personality with a high risk tolerance. Good for you!
1. Scuba diving (take down a can of sardines & feed the fish)
2. Sky diving (free fall)
3. Climb a hill or bluff at sunrise (or sunset)
4. Extreme sailing
I guarentee you that any or all of these will expand your mind, heart and soul.
You'll also end up knowing that you're kind, courageous, thankful and full of life. (And having a blast learning it!!):D

No idea how those will affect your BS.
Are you subject to hypo's and if so do you get aggressive/angry/emotional when you are having a hypo?
If so I'd think real hard before trying your experiments.
It's been a lot of years, long before I got the D, but from what I recall, tripping will make it very difficult to keep track of or maintain your BS. Any hypo while tripping will NOT be fun. An aggressive/angry/emotional hypo while tripping could be far worse.
That stuff won't expand your mind or teach you anything either but I expect you will have to learn that for your self. I did.

Interesting first (and so far only) post! I hope you come back and learn more about the rest of the diabetic world.

Hey meddle,
For better or worse, I've done some acid in the past, and LOTS of mushrooms. I didn't notice any adverse effects on my BS, but you need to be prepared to treat hypos and test often. You'll likely confuse some of the symptoms of the high with the symptoms of low BS, so check often. I often lost my appetite so treating hypos was difficult.
I'm sure you're somewhat aware of this, but it can't be guaranteed that you'll come out of the high unscathed. As mentioned by other posters, hallucinogenics are unpredictable and will affect each person differently. I've seen people try to pull out their own teeth because they were convinced the teeth were growing rapidly and were going to pierce her mouth. I once didn't sleep for 24 hours because my bed sheets felt like a bed of sand. There's a chance that you might forget about your diabetes while you're off on one of these "bad trips".
All-in-all, I gotta say I don't regret doing those drugs, but I'm not too sure it really enlightened my mind any. At the time, when the poison is racing through your veins, you might think you've discovered the meaning of life - I found it once inside a lit flood light while blaring Staring At The Sun:D - but when the drugs wear off, it all seems so ridiculous and you can't pinpoint what made those thoughts so profound at the time.
One last thing, practice some moderation... one tab/gram at a time and apply as tolerated, and do it in some wide open spaces (many people have bad trips when they get cooped up in their minds and paranoia kicks in.
Good luck and have fun.

I've done both, although in the distant past before I had to take insulin to control my diabetes. I didn't notice any direct effects on blood sugar, although I wasn't testing a huge amount. I did notice a big effect of mushrooms on my liver. In retrospect I bet the MODY3 gene (which is a regulatory protein that also has functions in the liver) might make it harder to process some recreational drugs. I was lucky to have a bunch of Alacer vitamin C packets with me. I drank like 3 or 4 of those, and the incredible toxic feeling of the mushrooms abated.
I know you are not looking for someone to tell you not to do the drugs - but if sharing experience is worth anything here it goes! I had very deep spiritual and mind expanding experiences with drugs, and I respect cultures that put some ritual around it so they have their proper sacred space. All that being said, what I was looking for is now available to me in a much less toxic form, and absolutely legal too! I was looking for mind expansion, a feeling of oneness, a deeper knowledge of myself and this world - going beyond the sleep of this day to day life. Drugs can, sometimes, open these experiences by virtue of changing how the brain is working - but this is a different thing from knowing the nature of your own mind, and how to change your own mental & emotional experience directly. I eventually found spiritual teachings, teachers in authentic lineages and fellow spiritual travelers that were much more expansive to my state of being than any drug experience could be, and they can penetrate into your daily life in a way that drug induced experiences can not.
If there would be one book I would recommend in this regard, it is Tenzin Wangyal's "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep". Available on Amazon, with some reviews, if you want to google it.
