Hi guys,
Just want to know. My FBG has always been at about 82 more or less, sometimes a bit less. Over the weekend, I took it after about 9 hours fast, it was 90.
This morning, I decided to test again, it was 90 again. The last meal I had was yesterday at about 15:30. Although this morning wasn't totally a fasting test, I did have a cup of coffee, little bit of milk and sweetener (no sugar). With a such a long fast, I thought my levels would be somewhere in the high 70s of low 80s. Could the coffee had such a big impact on the numbers? This is the highest FBG I have ever tested. I know as a rule, this is still considered normal, but is this a bad sign?

I would not consider one 90 to be a bad sign. Meters can be off sometimes by as much as 20%, so technically there is even less difference between an 80 and a 90, if that makes sense. It could be caused by any number of things... but a 90 is still a pretty good number.

Hi Moonglo, I realize it's not a bad number, but for me it is a new high, the 2nd 90 in 5 days, but I hear what you are saying, I'll just keep an eye on it

Caffeine effects some peoples BG readings. Several here have reported that it raises them up. And milk has carbs. Even a small amount may raise you.
However a 90 is nothing to stress over. As Moonglo said, meters have a ±20% range. So it could be 72-108.

Thanks Mortis, that's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure.
I wouldn't worry about it. I test my girlfriend somewhat normally, not out of fear of her getting T2, but out of curiosity. She's perfectly healthy and not at risk.
Her fastings typically run in the high 70's to mid 80's, but she does have an occasional number in the upper 80's to low 90's. Alot of things besides food can raise blood sugar. It may be stress, perhaps fever or infection, that time of the month, or it could have been a big high carb meal the night before perhaps.
I see alot of non-diabetics come through my hospital and it seems that all of the true fastings are in the 70's and 80's. I sure wouldn't worry about a number in the low 90's, however, I would track it yearly just to make sure it's not going up. I personally feel that once you are regularly above a fasting of 95, it's time to get proactive with it. That number is going to be much lower than what most people think, but I do believe it's a sign.

Hi JPS
I know I shouldn't worry, it's just that the 1st time, I didn't have a very high carb meal the previous night, and the 2nd time I haven't eaten since the previous afternoon?
In this week I tested again, just out of curiosity, and it was 94 the one morning, also didn't have a big carb meal the previous evening. But I did have bronchitis, you say that sickness can elevate your levels, could that have caused it then, although I didn't have fever at any stage?

Absolutely - infections and stress (i.e. stress hormones, like adrenaline, steriods) have a definite impact on blood sugar levels.

It could also be that you're going a bit low since you hadn't eaten in so long (over 9 hours the first time & probably even longer the 2nd?) and your body dumped in a little bit of glucose from your liver.
But I'd also say the coffee could be the culprit too - there are carbs in the milk, plus caffeine can raise your number too.
Plus, some people find their morning glucose can be different if they test before getting out of bed vs. after.

Tested this morning, about 1 hour after getting up, was 95 (had no coffee :)). Had last meal at about 17:00 yesterday, but had ice cream at about 19:00 last night (:(, yes I know I shouldn't have, but couldn't resist) , could that have caused the raise?
Sorry about all the questions, but I'm trying to figure out what foods to avoid, and what is normal for me, and definitely anything above 86 is not normal for me!
