Can someone clarify this for me .. in my bobypump class the instructor keeps saying that we need to get latic acid in our muscles (depending on which part of the body we are pumping) but I thought this was dangerourous for diabetics? Is latic acid build up in muscles the same thing as latic acidosis? Sorry for the trivial question but just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing for my diaetes:o

Most likely it's not harmful and won't lead to lactic acidosis.. lactic acid is actually fuel for muscles, and makes them work more efficiently.. in a sense, they need it.

Are you on any meds? Specifically metformin? if so, I'd talk with your doc and have your electrolytes checked, just in case. If you're fine there.. you shouldn't have any problems.

I thought lactic acid was a byproduct of exercise. Getting it "in there" would be an indication of hard effort. The more efficiently you clear the lactic acid from the muscles, the longer or harder you can work, or both. "Lactate threshold" (sp?) is the heart rate you can work at without overloading the muscles with lactic acid. Muscles need glucose to burn and lactic acid is the waste.

Oh, and to answer your actual question, exercise is generally an excellent thing for diabetics as long as you blood sugar is below 200-250. If it is too high, some risk factor I do not recall can hurt you. Not sure about Metformin interaction.

Thanks Guys for you replies - but I know need to know what to eat - the first week I was like all powerful and energised but this week I struggled both with body pump one night and walking 6ks the next night! Do I need to "up" the carbs? I don't really want to but am afraid that I might compromise my form with the weights. Yesterday morning my BS was 4.1 and before walking in the evening (before meals) my BS was 4.3 I had pasta with chicken last night and my BS was 5.8 - I am looking foward to tonight for bodypump but am a bit scared because I am feeling a bit tired already - and it's only 9:00am:eek: some advice regarding what to eat whilst exercising would be great. Oh and I weighed myself and although I did put one kg on, my body fat decreased by 1%....I want to loose weight and build lean muscle but am not sure if the weight should be going up. ( I have a fat tania scales that shows fat content)

Thanks in advanced for any advice that I receive;)

What to eat and when is part of the 'art' in diabetes self management. No one answer will work for everyone or even the same person all the time. So many factors.

I tend to eat what my wife fixes without much planning for tomorrows exercise. If my sugar is under 120 before the gym in the morning, I have a few ounces of juice before I head out. If it is higher than 160 I correct but only enough to get me to 140 knowing that the workout will deal with the rest. I also suspend my pump for the duration of my workout.

As for feeling tired or listless, test you sugar and correct or find some music that will pump you or anything that's motivating. The worst thing that insulin swings do to me is alter my motivation drastically and finding ways to beat those blues is paramount.

Hi,

Not sure how long you (Odar) have been exercising. You seem to be very aware of the details of your control. In the past when I have been training for a race (1/2 marathons) I would tend to start pretty heavy duty and then have some mornings where I was just beat. I think you need to listen to your body and maybe lighten your next session. If you are on a good routine don't cancel a session since that would affect your diabetes control but maybe your body is telling you it needs a bit of a break.
As to weight increase - doesn't muscle weigh more than fat? If that's an old wives tale, I don't want to know. Whenever I start exercising again I put on weight; it takes 2-3 weeks of reg. exercies to get my blood sugars where I want them, get my insulin r-adjusted and then finally I feel clothes loosening and then the lbs. SLOWLY go down.

Vicki,
Muscle does weigh more than fat. It is denser.
