Hi, i've been taking metformin 3x1000mg daily for 7years. In the last 12mths I have been feeling horrible. I will feel like I am not in control of my head or legs, nauseated, diarrhoea etc. Lately these feelings were worse and regular so Dr has decided to give me a break from the metformin and see if i improve. After only a day off the medication I have had some "spotting" and felt like a period is on the way when I'm only halfway through regular cycle. Does anyone know if this is normal?? Has anyone stopped metformin and noticed other changes?

I do not know if it is, but would not be surprised ... keep a record of 3 cycles or 3 months' duration, and if you continue to have weird symptoms, ask your GYN about this.

(sounds like the classic take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning! This is what my OB friend told me!).

I know Metformin is used in PCOS to help control the menstrual cycle, so it would probably follow that if you had been on it for 7 years, it was probably affecting you in some way. But to spot after only one day seems to me like it would be something else. Are you sure all the symptoms you have can be attributed to the metformin? Are you on thyroid medicine? Just some thought of mine....hope they help.
