My name is Todd and I had blood work done 2 weeks ago. My doctor's MA called with advisement from my doctor (because he is on vacation) that the glucose shows diabetes and the 3 month average (sorry, I don't know the test) also shows diabetes. I have no idea what the numbers are, or what type (is it pre? Type 2?).

I don't have another doctor's appointment for another 2 weeks, so I really don't know much else. I have been reading about diabetes, changed my diet to a common sense approach, and started more exercise until I have more information.

This seems like a great place to get information so I am happy I joined.

First, welcome aboard! :D
Second, get a glucose meter and test strips!
Third, kudos for beginning to alter your menus already!

And shame on that office for hanging you out to dry like they did!

So, hello, TruDude. Sounds like you realize some changes are going to be in order, and in fact are already making some. And then the fact that you are here, says you are probably someone who wants to understand. Knowledge is power.

I'm guessing, like you, that your doctor is thinking either you are pre-diabetic or type 2. Please do take it seriously, even if he says "pre-diabetic."

The name of the test which gives an average look at the amount of glucose in your bloodstream over about the last three months is the "hemoglobin A1c" test. (Haemoglobin if you live where my spell-checker seems to have been put together ;) ) In these forums lately you will usually see that abbreviated simply as A1c. In much older posts here, I think you will see it abbreviated HbA1c, Hb being the abbreviation for hemoglobin. Occasionally you will see HgA1c, but that seems wrong to me, as Hg is the abbreviation for mercury!

Your glucose test is probably either a plasma glucose test, or a whole blood glucose test. Either way, it is a measure of how much sugar was in your blood at that moment in time. WE take blood glucose test everyday at home to monitor and know how to treat ourselves.

Welcome to the forum.

Until you see your doctor, limit your carbohydrate intake. It would also help if you picked up a cheap blood glucose meter (Walmart) and started testing.
