View Full Version : we are sooo brainwashed!
I was describing a recipe to a coworker ... listed ingredients and I got to ... CREAM. "Well you know," she said, softly, (and yet, as if I were IGNORANT or something), "you could almost just leave that cream out."
Restraining myself, I replied, "Well, you could, but the cream really makes it."
Thing that gets me is, I was describing 2 TBS - 1/4 cup of cream! Per FOUR SERVINGS! How much butterfat is that? And so much bang for the buck. Compared to the butterfat in cheese, or butter on a roll ... ? Cream for some reason is particularly demonized. I understand, because it was like the last thing I was willing to add back into my diet. Cream has roughly 1/2 the fat of butter, measure for measure.
It just got me thinking, I know this woman dines out a lot ... does she have any idea what is in most of what she EATS?

Sadly, most people don't know. And, I guess they don't have to know ... if it doesn't have a disproportionate affect on their bodies.
But, people really need a reality check.
Get away from food marketing & start eating real food!
Just my opinion, of course!

What does she have in her coffee..? Creamer..? Half 'n Half...? Don't both of these use HFCS :D
Brainwashed is right Linda... the real shame is that eating well is not just important for those of us with D.
Yep, Barrie, and YEP, Frank!
What a crazy@$$ marketing world we live in! Everything is SPUN.
My next brainwashed tale ... a fallacy that when examined falls apart:
A mom on a kid listserv I am on was recommending replacing cap'n crunch with cheerios ... somehow in all my D readings, I had OVERLOOKED an obvious one:
STARCH is more rapidly digested than sucrose ... but all the sugar-paranoia in ADHD and hyperactivity focuses only on the SUCROSE in breakfast cereals ... not sayin' the sugar is good ... but what are we thinking?

You have more restraint than I!
And re: does she have any idea what is in most of what she EATS? In a word - NO. In three words - not a clue.

She is intelligent, she is also THIN ... but no, I do not think she has given it much thought.

Oh... but Cheerios has those really cute adverts with the Dads and the babies and everythin' :T Admittedly a step up from Archduke Chocula and Admiral Crunch but not but that much
By the way... does she prefer the Square or Diamond shaped Shreddies...? (Now that's a clever advert)

You forgot the most crucial ingredient and the last step to make the recipe complete.

She=6 billion souls. We're only about 40 years into a very long and rough ride.
When's the last time you saw anyone outside of a home eating a healthy real-food meal?

Yep, we live in a society where any amount of fat = evil, and empty calories from carbohydrates = gimme more.
It's so wrong it's not funny.

Even worse (IMHO) with the concept that if its low/no fat it must be good so you end up with things like cookies that have MORE calories per cookie than the ones with fat since they had to add so much more sugar (in whatever form).
I remember one poor girl at my last job who replaced her favorite foods with no/low fat alternatives and couldn't figure out why she started GAINING weight .... until I pointed out that the fat free dressing she was pouring on her salad had more calories than the regular version since the oil had been replaced with lots more sugar/starch syrup

Oh I know.. a big one is low-fat (not light) yogurt. Some have MORE calories than their whole-milk counterparts... shocking, but true! Oddly enough, whole-milk yogurt is becoming increasingly difficult to find where I am.

Hes a VoDoo Doctor as we call him here in these parts, we like em though, sensible, honest, logical, I pin to the mat right out of the gate. Story goes, when he had children he wanted an alternative to todays medicines when possible. He then saw there were others out there who thought as he did, so he opened his own clinic.

We like open minded. I have done a lot of research in therapy treatments for my wife in the past. He is willing to do most of them if need be. Open minded Docs are hard to come by.

I've been brainwashed myself and have started to see the light over the last couple years. I remember a "healthy" dessert we used to make. Angelfood cake with fat-free, sugar free pudding soaked into it with crushed pineapple mixed with light cool-whip. It was "fat free" however, it was full of chemicals and you couldn't walk by it without taking a bolus dosage!
