Does anyone use carb countdown/ carb watch foods? Or do you just buy regular foods and just eat small portions? I really liked bread, potatoes and pastas before I was diagnosed, so I now use carb watch bread witch only has 6 carbs per slice. Has anyone tried low carb pasta? I want to try some pasta and also seen carb watch speghetti. Do any of you use carb watch salad dressing?
Im sorry for asking all these stupid questions. :(

I buy some low carb bread (which i don't buy often since I don't eat it that much) but MISSION tortilla have a low carb flour tortilla that I buy...the small one is only 7 net carbs and it is great...I tend to look at labels but in the long run usually buy low carbs and low fat products.

I met with a dietician last fall who suggested upping my fiber intake to control my glucose carb related spikes. She tipped me off about a double fiber bread which is made by Nature's Own I think. It is delicious, low in carbs and plus you can deduct the fiber content from your carb count since it is over 5g per slice. I have really good luck with the BGs eating it. Also she came up with an idea for me since I could not give up Cheerios in the morning for the recommended Hi-fiber rabbit food....*er* I mean...cereal...I measure out half a serving of Cheerios and half a serving of Fiber One. That way I don't get the big carb hit and resulting spike but still get to eat my beloved Cheerios - I barely notice the Fiber One hidden in there.
I tried the low carb pastas and like them okay but I will say they are not as tasty to me as the regular pastas.
Belinda, thanks for the tortilla tip. I will look for those as I love fajitas and find my BGs spike alarmingly from the regular tortillas.
Jeana, what is the fat content like on some of those carb watch products? I find some of the Adkins-marketed products horrifying when it comes to the fat content....

Yum! Bread!
I stick to my guns on bread. I only eat Sara Lee whole wheat. Spoiled? My wife says so. :D
I look at the labels on stuff and try to abide by the serving rule, however sometimes I catch myself cheating a little. I've never enjoyed the low-carb, low-fat cra... I mean stuff. Gimme full fat! :) I like Vitamin D milk (yeah, the thick stuff). I just can't seem to take a likin' to that skim stuff. It's for sissys. Of course I have to measure it out, and I don't get to drink as much as I would like to, but what I give up in quantity, makes up in quality.
I have found that through the years, if I treat a food like a treat, I enjoy what little I get a whole lot more.

When I find something low carb that tastes good then I'll switch over to it.
Mostly, I either use the "Regular" foods or just take them off my "Can Eat" list.

I just eat smaller portions of "regular" food....I hsould count carbs but I mainly count calories to help keep off weight.

I avoid the 'low carb' branded foods. I am a habitual label reader. Often the supposed 'low carb' offerings aren't significantly low carb or they contain too little fiber and/or too much sugar alcohols.
I find it better for me to eat 'regular' foods. For bread and pasta, I choose whole wheat. Instead of white potatos, I use sweet potatos. Of course, I limit my portions of all of the above.

I just eat regular food(small portions), usually 4 or 5 meals(my
Hubbie calls them snacks)a day. I do eat whole wheat bread,
brown rice, lots of veggies(usually my home-made soups or raw),
love fruits, 100 per cent Post bran(sometimes a handful mixed into my wild berry oatmeal or by itself), yogurts, cottage cheese, my own pancakes
and French-toast, jello with whipped cream, etc., etc. I occasionally will have a pasta dish. I do have 2 small potatoes a week and meat usually 3 times a week. I will(when I visit Mom :D )have a piece of her yummy-
made cherry cheese cake, lemon miranque(sp)pie, whipped pumpkin pie or
her Queen Elizabeth cake(extra insulin required). :-

Belinda, this was a great tip. I bought some Mission tortillas and took them to my fav. Mexican restaurant lunch spot and substituted them so I could devour some chicken fajitas guilt-free. They are delicious!!! Thanks

I haven't found a low carb bread that I like but the low carb Special K is great! I eat it almost every morning - bs doesn't spike and I'm not hungry until it's time for lunch.

My dietician says that Fiber cuts the effective carbs.
So I eat whole grain bread. She also says flax seed have good oils and provide more fiber so I get breads that have ground flax.
I buy whole wheat speghetti and I add zuchinni, red peppers and other fiberous veggies to the sauce.
I think starch is more of a problem than carbs per se. I eat fruit, especially apples, sometimes three a day. I avoid potatoes, corn, white rice and white breads. I really limit like brown rice and the pasta.
I only use one slice of bread for a sandwich for instance.

Have you tried carb-aware milk? 3/4 of the sugars in the milk are converted to protein, so you consume 3 g carbs per cup instead of 12.
This is what I use to ensure I'm getting a natural balance of calcium and magnesium with vitamin D. It's also good for cooking and baking.

Well Lynne.... No I have not tried carb-aware milk. I have thought about it but thought it probally did not taste that good. When I do drink milk I drink 1% or 2% but in small amounts. Do you think the carb-aware milk tastes the same as regular milk? I use to like a big cup of milk with my dinner but now I just drink water.
Thanks for the heads-up about the carb milk!

It's real milk, whole that is to say 4% butterfat, I like it and I appreciate not having to consume 12 g sugars in one cup, it's one of the things I had been missing and I had been concerned about natural sources of calcium, magnesium and Vit. D.
It tastes rich, I hadn't used whole milk for years and I like it.

I had been concerned about natural sources of calcium
Ooh, I sometimes forget that is more of problem for womens than for mens.
However, research at cedar sinai medical centers, has shown that if women will particpate in light weight training, they can actually increase the density of bones, in other words, reverse some of the effects osteoporosis.
Same holds true for us Old Men, too. :D

I do seek out the lower carb substitutes that are out there. I buy Carb Countdown milk, low-carb/high fiber bread, cereal and tortillas, low carb BBQ sauce, ketchup, etc. The one thing I will not trade is candy. The sugar alcohols about kill me, so it's the real thing or nothing at all for me!
