I've been looking into Metformin and would love to hear what people's thoughts are on it.

Is it effective enough? How does it compare to insulin treatment?

Are there any serious problems with it beyond lactic acidosis and fairly common indigestion that I might not know about?

Thanks!

It took me three full weeks to be able to tolerate metformin. Until then, I was very sick with it. That said, I haven't had problems since I became acclimated to it.

I've taken met for ten years this month & insulin since January of this year.

It's inexpensive, doesn't cause lows, and can be helpful over a long period of time. That said, it wasn't enough for me over time.

I agree with Barrie . . . it made me mildly ill for a short while, but it's working, and it's treatment I can afford.

This begs the question - with what type of diabetes and in what situation? Fill us in a bit about your diabetes and current treatment, lk44...

It treats insulin resistance by slowing gluconeogenesis -- production of glucose in the liver.

I am on 1000 mg twice per day and it works great, suppresses my appetite, and no side effects whatsoever. It is a great drug as far as I am concerned.

I'm on 500mg of the extended release once a day. I have had none of the side effects and think it's working fine.

I also low carb though so I don't know if it's that or the Met that keeps my numbers in control.
